A New York Police Department spokesman says the actor Heath Ledger has been found dead at a downtown Manhattan residence. He was 28.

NYPD spokesman Paul Browne said Ledger had an appointment for a massage at the Manhattan apartment believed to be his home. The housekeeper, who went to let Ledger know the masseuse was there, found him unconscious at approximately 3:30 p.m. ET, according to the New York Times. After receiving no response from the actor after shaking him, they called authorities.

The Australian-born actor has a two-year-old daughter, Matilda Rose, with former fiancee Michelle Williams. Ledger was set to play the Joker in the upcoming Batman film "The Dark Knight." He received an Academy Award nomination for his work in "Brokeback Mountain."

Drugs were suspected in her case too. He's just so young though! They split up a month before her 2nd birthday. That's so sad. I don't know how anyone can lose a parent like that...

They don't know the cause of death yet. I just saw that on cnn, the only thing that has been confirmed so far is that he was found dead.

OMG this makes me so terribly sad I'm gonna cry. I named my son after him T.T. I've been watching Heath Ledger on T.V. since 97, he was in a show called Roar. Sometimes they still play it on sci fi channel.

Oh man, he was hot.

I can't believe HE is dead....of all the drugged out stars, ya know?

Being a fellow aussie i am very sad!!! Hate hearing about people so young dying!! Especially when they take there own life....so sad!!!
