Postnatal burning during sex

Hi,

My wife had a C section delivery in early Oct 2007. Now it's Jan 2008.

We've been very careful and only started having intercourse about a month ago, and even then have only done so about 3 times. She complains of pain on entry, but that we suppose is normal.

However, our main concern is that last night, during intercourse, after entry, she complained of a consistent burning sensation. She then told me that she felt burning the other two times we had postnatal intercourse, but it wasn't as intense, so she ignored it. The previous 2 times we used both latex (flavoured) and polyurethane Trojan condoms with vasiline and last night we used a polyurethane condom with k-y jelly. Prior to getting pregnant and during pregnancy we just used vasiline (no condoms).

She never had a real postnatal checkup with an ob or gyny. Just a checkup with her family doctor (who also does normal deliveries and assisted in our C section) a month and a half after delivery and she said my wife was fine.

My wife's also going on a trip for several months to see her family, and we want to take full advantage of the time we have until then, but we're afraid to do anything. I don't even know if we'll have time to schedule a proper checkup with an ob-gyny before she leaves as we already bought her tickets, and we have no idea what could be causing the burning.

Any advice, information and insight would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Might just be something as simple as thrush. Has she had antibiotics recently? They can disrupt the natural flora and fauna of the vagina. Often with thrush there is nothing at all to see, and only the burning / itching will alert you to the problem.

She could obtain some medication from the pharmacist. If this doesn't work, she really needs to see a doc in case there is an infection.

She isn't on any antibiotics or medication. It's rarely even takes Tylenol. What else could it be if it's not thrush? Is there anything else we should watch out for? Should we avoid intercourse until we have this diagnosed and treated?

Well, thrush can start up for a variety of reasons, not just because of antibiotics, so I would say it wouldn't do any harm to treat for thrush (one pessary can sort it out within hours). You should also treat yourself with the accompanying ointment that you get in the pack. Wait three or four days before resuming sex.

The other thing you could try is some lube, if you haven't already done so. There is a long-acting one - applied every three or four days by applicator - called Replens and it really is effective.

Good luck.
