Q: Always Cold

Shane brought it to my attention that I should go to the doctor because I'm always cold. It can be 80 degrees in this house (like it is right now) & I'm still freezing. Summertime I'm still cold. I don't know what's wrong with me. I never thought anything of it until Shane told me I should go to the doc, I just always joked around & said I had ice in my blood. Then I made the mistake of googling & all kinds of things came up about Thyroid. How do they check if you have thyroid problems? Anyone else have this problem?

Are you anemic/iron deficient? I am, and I am ALWAYS cold. That's my problem. Don't jump to scary conclusions!

Not that I'm aware of. I don't know how they check if you're anemic but the last time I had my iron checked was right after I had Kaylee & nothing was wrong there.

It's a blood test...if you haven't been eating a lot of red meat or you've stopped taking vitamins or anything like that, you could be. I think thyroid might be a blood test too, so it's worth looking into.

That would probably also explain why I've been getting so lightheaded Sad

I have an appointment Wednesday to talk about changing my birth control so I'll have to ask her about all this too.

For some reason I was thinking that when people have thyroid problems they either gain or lose weight? I wouldn't think that would have effect on being cold..Or am I thinking of something completely different?

It could definately be your thyroid. The coldness is usually associated with hypothyroidism. I was diagnosed with it a few years ago. I was CONSTANTLY cold before they figured out what it was. All they do is a blood test. And then if you have it they will set you up on medication and then do periodic blood test to make sure everything stays at the right level.

Hypothyroidism causes severe weight gain, generally.
Hyperthyroidism usually causes severe weightloss.
I didn't think it had anything to do with body temp or anything...

Being anemic could definitely cause you to get lightheaded. I would ask your doc to run some tests...just simple blood tests can tell a lot.

That is not true. It does have a lot to do with your temp along with TONS of other things. And it doesn't necessarily cause severe weight gain, however it can contribute to some. It usually just makes it harder to gain weight or harder to lose weight but it doesn't just make you pack on the pounds instantly

I know people with both, and the one with hypothyroidism went from 120lbs to about 180 in the course of 4mos. The person with hyperthyroidism went from a decent 165 (for a 6'3" guy) to a little under 120 in about the same timeframe. I'm just speaking from what I know.
And saying that I didn't think it had anything to do with body temp was me saying I really didn't think that. I didn't know it.

That maybe be but it's not the case with everyone. Not everyone has extreme cases like that.

Michelle maybe this would explain why you have a harder time getting the weight off?? (Not saying that you have a lot to get off lol) You never know.....maybe it wouldn't hurt to get tested for that too.

I wasn't saying YOU were wrong just that the FACTS were. Sorry if it came across wrong

Your friends thyroid levels must have been off quite alot. Because USUALLY the weight gain/loss is not that severe.

Most people have this disorder since they were little (genetic) and simply don't know it til later in life so they don't spontaneously gain/lose weight but it may have just been an issue they gradually struggle with throughout their lives. If they do spontaneously come down with the disorder thats generally due to lifestyle and the weight gain/loss may be due to bad lifestyle choices

I think it was compounded by the fact that the one who gained all the weight had just quit lacrosse, and didn't replace the activity with anything, and the one who lost all the weight got it in his head to run track. Rolling Eyes My friends are weird

I'll definately be asking for some blood work Wednesday then. I've been cold like this for at least a few years now but like I said I never thought much of it & always joked around about it. It'd explain why I'm having a hard time losing the little bit of weight that I want to lose also.. Then my getting lightheaded all the time.. Ahhhhhhhhhh Sad
