severe sore throat, cough, and trouble breathing Posted: 01-17-08 07:06am
I usually never go to the doctor, because
most things goes away after a couple days
anyways, but this time, I'm not so sure.
A week ago, I started having severe sore
throat, I'm 26 years old, but I've never
had a sore throat like this before. I
figured I might get a cold or something,
but I never did. Now it's been a week, and
I'm still in pain.
Not just the sore throat, but the last
days I've had cough too, in the mornings,
I cough up white stuff, I'm not sure if
it's slime or not, but it has a weird
texture, and it's bright white. Kinda like
wet paper. That lasts for an hour or two
after I wake up. Then the cough is dry,
and sometimes I cough until I gag. Not
very comfortable!
It's harder than normal to breathe, it's
not like I'm suffocating, but I'm taking
shorter breaths, and it hurts a little
when I breathe. And if I've had a bad day
with coughing, I taste blood in my mouth
(just a little bit..).
I quit smoking a month ago, but don't
think smoking has anything to do with it.
I'm also allergic to cats, but I have one
living in my house, but it hasn't really
bothered me, so I don't think that's what
it is either.
I've self-medicated myself with Cepacol
sore throat pills, and Prednisolon http://en.wikipedia.or
g/wiki/Prednisolone (a
corticosteroid), that I got from my doctor
a couple years ago when I had pnemonia.
If it was just a cold with sore throat I
would have shrugged it off, because that's
normal, but I have a sore throat without
the cold? I have no sinus problems at all.
And no runny/itchy eyes.
Does anyone know what I have, and if I
should see a doctor?
Another thing, I just had a cold 1 month
ago, so shouldn't I be immune to all that
stuff now anyways?
Thanks!

Sounds like you might have developed an
infection w/ the white phlegm and stuff.
I agree that self-medication is ok for
mild cases of viral infections, but if it
becomes bacterial, you'll need more help.
Have you tried a cough expectorant to
clear up those tarry lungs after the
smoking?

This may be late as you are hopefully
feeling much better now. However, I am a
smoker. I have given up smoking several
times and I'm in the process of trying
again...soon.
When I've quit smoking in the past, I have
developed a horrible chest cold. I've
asked about it and been told that it is
normal in some people if they have smoked
moderately or above and if they have been
smoking for a long time.
Obviously, I hope you got it checked out,
but it CAN be caused by giving up smoking
and it can hang on in a mild form for
several weeks.
