Q: tmj pain in ear

I've had TMJ for about four years now and it's HORRIBLE. I don't think I've ever had pain this bad. For the past month I'd have sharp, shooting pains in my ear. I thought I had an ear ache so I went to the doctor and a got med...well all the medicine is gone and the pain is still there! I really don't think it's an ear ache. The pain is so sharp it's nearly unbearable, horrible pain. But it only last for a few seconds, then it's gone. Anyone else have this pain, or am I all alone? And what can I do for the pain?

yes i have it too. you can use heat on it. it helps. what you are feeling is called referred pain. Its really the jaw that is causing it. lots of tmj patients have this. ther is something that can treat it---since doing it my ear pain is quite diminished. pm me and we can talk more. what all have you done for this?

also--the jaw can referr pain to other parts of the body--you can have toothaches so dont let any one do any root canals etc unless you are sure that it is the tooth and not the jaw. there are many different parts of the body that are effected by this.

TMJ pain can also be caused by stress overly tight muscles in the neck especially the Sternocleidomastoid, massater and digastric muscles. These must be loosened off and the TMJ can then reset. Find a good Cranial Osteopath and treat the cause.

I had spinal, neck, ear, eye, jaw, teeth, shoulder pains, migraines, congested ears, nose, throat problems, a throbbing swollen face, lack of energy. A lot can be affected by tmd.

I to have excruciating ear pain. I got hit by a car back in the 70's. I was a pedestrian. The car cought my right leg and sent me face first into a light pole. The accident took out 5 of my front teeth, multiple bruises on my face, and road rash on my neck. Mostly all of the injury was on my left side, exactlty where the pain is to this day. In the morning when i first wake up, i can barely move my jaw. 3 Advil later and i semi good to go. I can't chew steak, obviously no gum, and it has affected my sex life. A deep kiss is uncomfortable, and oral sex with my husband is
not the greatest either as i can't really move my mouth that well. I have learned to deal with it. I hate it. I get super headaches, earaches, and a just plain crappy feeling, a lot. I have an 8 tooth permanent bridge resulting from the accident. Though 5 were knocked out, 3 more had to be removed due to injury. I am 51 years old and sad to say, i am used to this annoyance. Somethimes though, i am tempted to go on line and buy pain killers from the internet. I don't have med insurance.

Hi girl, it sounds like you have been through alot. First off, I just want to commend you for working through all of that! Strong Girl! Okay, so let me see what I can make of this. The symptoms you are experiencing are those of TMD, although because of your trauma, you may have other issues as well. I dont know the complete medical history of your accident, but I would like to add that an 8 unit bridge is quite impressing. With as much dental work as you have had, your bite may be off, resulting in what is known as malocclusion. That could have something to do with it. But the big picture is the trauma to the jaw joint and condile. You have a few options. As a temporary fix, you could alternate hot and cold compresses on your jaw joints, and take a regulated daily dose of muscle relaxers. And seeing a chiropractor will help with any back and neck symptoms. While all these help, it is not a permanent fix, and will have to be repeated over and over again. You could have jaw surgery like Tmddyan did. This option is one of the most painful procedures out there. Im sure Tmddyan would probably agree with this. We treat TMD in a different way, using TMD splints. I myself am a TMD patient because I have migraines, clicking and popping in my jawjoints, earaches, stiff neck muscles, backaches, and the worst... lock jaw. Id love to be of any service, if youd like more information, just message me!

OOOO i agree with hazelnut. Hazelnut had great advice too!You had a bad accident. The bad accident might have hurt your neck also. How could it not? if the force was so great to knock out teeth? A bad neck such as whiplash or just a bad neck can actually cause jaw problems, But it is very COMMON for tmj'ers to have BOTH! A bad neck seems to go hand and hand with a bad jaw! i go to a chiropracter, which helps alot. Hope you feel better! cindy
