Question about braxton hicks
Posted: 01-15-08 09:12am

Are you still supposed to call your doctor if you are getting 4-5 braxton-hicks an hour? Or do you only call if you are getting real strong contractions?

Let me explain: My boss is 28 weeks. She's been having "what she is sure..couldn't possibly...right" type contractions. I'm sure (hoping) they are only b/h. She said they aren't really painful, but she is very aware of their existance. She also has a headache (and I think her face is slightly swollen).

I told her to drink some water and see if that helps. I also told her to make a note of how many she's getting and hour.

I'm just not sure if the rule applies to b/h or only contractions.

Thanks!

i think that is still the general rule. i'll be honest though, i get more than 5 an hour some days and i don't call. i just lay down and they go away after awhile. i don't think it's a big deal but i will be mentioning it at my appointment tomorrow.

the swelling is cause for concern though. does she have an appointment soon?

No, her next appt is in two weeks from today.

She did travel over the weekend. Maybe that is just messing with her? I don't really know. I don't want to worry her by any means. But, when she was explain what she was feeling to me she said she "must have pulled a muscle over her (points to side of stomach) because it hurts" and the way she said it just kind of made me...take note?

I'm sure I'm just worried for nothing. She just looks odd. (not in a bad way) I mean, I walked into her office and looked up and asked what was wrong. She didn't have to volunteer the info.

Are b/h regular? I always thought they were speratic? I'm wrong..right?

Wow, you would really think I would have researched the whole pregnancy thing a little more. Confused

As your pregnancy progresses, Braxton Hicks contractions tend to come somewhat more often, but until you get to your last few weeks, they should remain infrequent, irregular, and essentially painless. Sometimes, though, Braxton Hicks are hard to distinguish from early signs of preterm labor.

Play it safe and don't try to make the diagnosis yourself. If you haven't hit 37 weeks yet and you're having four or more contractions in an hour, or have any other signs of preterm labor, call your caregiver immediately.

maybe she should call her doctor?

yeah, like i said before, the swelling is more cause for concern. the first thing they always ask at appointments (like the second i walk in the room) is if i've noticed any swelling.

does she seem at all concerned?

Thanks for the info B. stupid filters at work wont let me do much at all.

Yeah, she is starting to get concerned. I was there during two of them, and they actually made her stop what she is doing. Plus they are coming every 14-15 minutes.

So, I talked her into calling. She was afraid she was just being overparanoid. She is waiting for them to call her back now.

She actually started swelling last Thursday. Her legs and feet are pretty bad.

she needs to go to a doctor, the headache needs to be checked out and so does the swelling

i dont know about the contractions, i didnt really have any bh until the last month and then they came strong and painful and turned into real contractions that lasted for the last 2 weeks...that month really sucked lol
