A plastic surgeon should be board certified by the american board of plastic surgery. By choosing a plastic surgeon certified by the abps, you can be assured the doctor has graduated from an accredited medical school and completed at least five years of additional residency. To be certified by the abps, a doctor must also practice plastic surgery for two years and pass comprehensive written and oral exams. The exact name of the board is important because there are other boards with similar names that do not indicate the same level of competency.
Your surgeon should complete a residency in plastic and reconstructive surgery accredited by the accreditation council on graduate medical education (acgme). In addition, the surgeon should be comfortable performing the procedure in which the patient is interested. Having the right credentials does not necessarily mean the doctor is skilled in specific types of surgery.
It is important that your doctor has hospital privileges to perform the proposed procedure, even in-office procedures. Hospitals give doctors privileges to do procedures that fit under their training guidelines.
How safe is plastic surgery?
All surgical procedures have risks and possible complications, and your doctor will advise you about your specific procedure. In general, cosmetic plastic surgery is only performed on healthy patients, and healthy patients tend to have fewer complications.
