Q: abdominal ultrasound showed renal pelves and calices

My son went for a abdominal ultrasound due to back to stomach pain. All was normal except for small stone in his gallbladder. However test showed a slightly prominent renal pelves and calices . NO DEFINITE HYDRONEPHROSIS PRESENT. How can his renal pelvis and calices be swollen if there is no hydronephrosis?? Also does calices mean kidney stones. Thank you for any info.

Not necessarily kidney stones, it could be an obstruction. That is what I had. An IVP (pylogram) can tell if there is a blockage. Also renal scan. This is what I had as well and it shows if there is any problem. Ask if you can be referred to a urologist.

Hi

Di the ultrasound mention anything about calcifications? Those are what add to the formation of stones.
The kidney can be swollen from a previous stone that passed and can take time for the kidney to get back normal size.
Also as aflsh mentioned it can be another type of obstruction such as UPJ. That usually shows up on an ultrasound, but having a CT Scan, IVP or a lasix renal scan can give a better picture as to what is going on with kidneys, ureters and bladder.
I've also had surgery for UPJ a few times already.
Sometimes UPJ is something a child is born with (congenital). This happens more in males than females.
My UPJ's are from scarring due to my kidney disease.
My son was born with this also and had surgery a few months after birth. They found it when I was pregnant during a routine ultrasound.

Did you have UPJ? How are you doing now?

You can both pm me anytime.

Yes I had UPJ in my left kidney. I had pyleoplasty surgery in 1999. I was born with this apparently, but never had any trouble till after my son was born. I also had a few stents put in after the surgery. Unfortunately, I lost function in that kidney but everyone is different. My best advice from experience is get a second or third opinion. How are you doing now? How is your son?

I'm sorry you lost function in your left kidney. How is your right one?
Are they planning to remove your left one?
I'm still suffering. I have a lot of scarring in my kidneys, ureters, bladder and urethra which caused my UPJ's (3 times so far) the nest time the kidney comes out.

My last surgery was almost 6 hours long and 5 days in the hospital. I would have already lot my kidney if I didn't get another opinion. The function is poor with my kidneys but that's been a life time problem in which we were told I would never have a problem.
My son is doing good with his kidneys...unfortunately he does have other health issues. It's very difficult when your child is sick (I'd much rather it be any day).

Thanks for asking.
