Q: Bile Acid Malabsorption

My 35 yr old daughter Elisabeth was yesterday diagnosed as having “Bile Acid Malabsorption”. This has come about after an endoscopy, a camera down the throat and the new pillcam - www.pillcam.com - which is a floating camera, all of which found absolutely nothing. (The pillcam is an amazing thing!)

She has many of the symptoms of IBS but that has been ruled out now. She continues to have stomach cramps and diarrhoea several days each week. She’s tried monitoring her diet and keeping a record of everything she eats but there would appear to be no pattern to the problem. This has been going on since last February.

All of the various blood tests came back fine, apart from a slight B12 deficiency.

She weighs under 8 stone now and will see a dietician as soon as they can give her an appointment.

The consultant says she should avoid fatty and rich foods.

There’s a lot on the net about this condition but not about how to treat it and which foods she should eat. I’ve explored the fat-free diets but these seem aimed at people losing weight whereas she wants to gain it!!

Does anyone know of this condition and if so, please do you have any advice?

I too suffer from this condition which started after I had my gall baldder removed. I also have the b12 deficiency. the treatment offered to me was to take 3 packets of cholestramine a day, I'm afraid I could not stomach this as it is like eating sand. When everything gives you stomach ache it is bad enough trying to eat never mind it being when it tastes vile. there is another product which I was given although I cant remember the name of it, it spreads over your food like a velvety fungus. I find if i'm having a 'really bad day' I take an immodium, it just takes the edge off the constant trips to the loo. also buscopan ibs tablets are useful if you know your going out to eat. Good luck

I to suffer from this and got a lot worse after having my gall bladder removed, they said it would help, but did the opposite! That was 3 years ago and I am now described as clinical anorexic, due to eating less and less over the years, because it seemed everything I ate set it off.
The medication I was given was of no use to me as my body wouldn't tolerate it.
Just wanted people to be aware of what this can end up as. I tend to live on liquids, bananas and sometimes dry cereal.
It is such an awful thing to live with and not much seems to be known about it or much information out there.

ive been suffering the same thing and had my gallbladder removed 5 years ago now. i was constantly going to the toilet more and more, it just got worse and my doctor just put me onto this powder called Questran Lite, you mix it up in a drink and swallow it, you cant taste it and the only effect it had on me was that i felt like i had a very full stomach and that was most likely due to the fact i just downed a large cup of orange juice in 30seconds

i would highly recommend it. i only have one a day and it makes a big difference!
