Q: Emergency Contraceptive Side Effects

I am on regular birth control (ortho tricyclin lo) and usually I use a backup method as well. I had sex on monday night without a condom and after realized that I had taken my pill late that day (2:30pm instead of 9 or 10 am) I took Plan B on wednesday at 2:00pm. I had called a planned parenthood and they told me EC was really not necessary considering I still took the pill and my boyfriend didn't finish inside me (although pulling out is not an effective method!). I have take Plan B before and i never had any side effects. However today (friday) I have had some painful cramping similar to the cramps I get during my period. I have also been lightheaded and sort of queasy. i know these are normal side effects for plan B but it seems weird that I didn't have them the day I took it, the day following, but the 3rd day! I know I am likely being paranoid but since I didn't have these symptoms before I'm a little worried considering some of these symptoms can also indicate pregnancy. It's too early to be feeling effects of a pregnancy if it had only been 5 days, right?

Thanks!

To be on the safe side, I would call the doctor. I took Plan B once and didn't have any side effects at all, but a friend of mine had light cramping.

Plan B will cause this, it happened to me.

You really didn't need to take it, you can be late and still be protected. You aren't even considered 'late' until you're at least 6 hours late.

But good for you for being so careful! And you're right, it is definitely too early to be feeling signs of pregnancy.

most pills 12 hours or more is considered late. i used to worry about taking pills at exactly the same time every day until a doctor put me at ease and told me that kind of accuracy really isnt important. the pill not only stops you ovulating, but it thickens the uterus lining as well so an egg couldnt implant anyway. all this considered it is the safest contraception short of getting your tubes tied!!!!!!!

really, you had no reason to take a plan b. there's being safe and then there's being overly safe! i'm not gonna criticise you for being careful, but i think you are just worrying unneccessarily. chill! Wink

my friend took the EC pill, and started throwing up, and was having painful amounts of adominal pain. I believe she was pregnant, and it caused an abortion, or miscarriage. But i would definitly call your doctor about it.

plan b cannot cause a miscarriage. not according to the instructions anyway, if she had already been pregnant (from another time) it would not interrupt the pregnancy. it is only effective in preventing pregnancy up to 72 hours after sex. i think what your friend experienced was extreme side effects. plan b sometimes would cause vomiting. if you do vomit within 3 hours of taking it, you need to take another one!

If you take plan b within 5 days of sex, there's no way you are pregnant yet (pregnancy takes two weeks to happen) so you couldn't have an abortion (since you weren't pregnant).

Plan B prevents pregnancy, it doesn't cause an abortion. If she was pregnant (like fiona said) from before, it wouldn't do a darned thing.
