Q: is diet soda unhealthy ?

I am trying to loose weight and it goes pretty good. In a year I lost about 60 lbs and I still have about 40 to go to reach my goal.

My question is... I like drinking diet soda's like diet pepsi but my boyfriends mom keeps telling us how bad these are for your health and how they fool your body so you still won't loose weight. Is this true?
Is it really harmfull if you drink 4 cans a day?

I use Splenda sweetner on everything too and am now worried that those are not healthy either.

Please advice Smile

Thanks

Me too!
I have lost weight, finally at my goal! I do the same thing you are saying; I use splenda on everything and drink diet soda's as well. I don't believe that it is unheathy. Splenda is the healthiest substitute there is. As for the diet soda, the only thing that I have noticed is that when I drink it I tend to be really hungry after drinking it. It is due to the surgar substitute that is in it, but I am aware and watch my hunger accordingly.

Splenda and other sugar substitutes are not healthy. Not a bit, not at all. They are chemicals. The best sugar replacement is stevia.

Neither are diet sodas. Look at the ingredients. Research what they do to your body. http://www.womentowomen.com/nutritionandwe ightloss/splenda.aspx

If you want a fizzy drink, try using 100% juice plus carbonated water. It's pretty good.

A natural sweetener called stevia is tons more healthy than Splenda. They've linked Splenda to cancer!

No evidence diet softdrinks are "unhealthy" per se
No study has conclusively linked diet soda or legal artificial sweetners with any serious health problems. Sugar substitutes are among the most thoroughly researched and studied susbtances ever, and the FDA has cleared them of any claims of harm to the body. One study in 2008 claiming diet sodas were linked to heart disease was quickly refuted by, of all organizations, the National Cancer Institute! One research-based concern about diet soda is possible acid erosion to the teeth (the same with any citric acid containing product)or a threat certain people with a disorder called phenylketonuria, which makes them have adverse reactions to aspartame. There is no scientific evidence at this point--and there has been much study on the matter--of health problems linked to sugar substitues. You'd think after 30 years, they'd find some if they were there.

I would have to disagree on this i think pepsi /Soda is very bad for you.
Ill you all a secret, I use Cola/pepsi to clean my toilet ! Can you image what it is doing to your body.
If you fancy something cold and fizzy like the last poster said make your own fizzy water and 100% juice. i find this very yummy. Smile Lovely with real fruit pieces in like a summer cocktail. Smile

All I know is Oprah's trainer,Bob Greene, said on a webcast that constantly drinking diet soda can cause a metobolic syndrome that can lead to diabetes. Also, when I was in weight watchers, they didn't recommend it either because there is still sodium in diet soda, which makes you thirsty so you want more, and you retain water.I'm no angel,I like soda,I just don't drink it everyday.

I don't know if people still check this forum, but one characteristic of many obese people (I am not saying any of you are obese), is that they drink at least 1 diet soda per day. Researchers tend to look at similarities b/w groups of people. Another characteristic of obese people is skipping breakfast, and eating little to no vegetables. The main idea that researchers might focus on is that a lot of people that drink diet soda are also engaging in other unhealthy eating practices. So no, drinking diet soda won't stop you from losing weight if you do everything else right (regular exercise...eating a healthy balanced diet...getting enough sleep...etc, etc.) But the truth of the matter is, that most likely drinking soda-diet or regular- is not part of a balanced healthy diet Sad I wish.
