Newly Converted Vegetarian
Posted: 01-10-08 23:54pm

Hey all! I am a new vegetarian...as of 2 weeks ago. I was never a big red meat eater in the first place, but I did eat chicken or seafood a few times a week. I decided to make a change after reading the book "Skinny B***h", which in case you haven't heard of it, it is about the veganism. I haven't gone vegan yet, just vegetarian so far, becaise I am fond of my dairy products. If all goes well though, I will plan on gradually giving up dairy and eggs as well. So far the transition to vegetarian has not been difficult at all and I am already beginning to feel and look better. Look forward to chatting with y'all!

changing to vegeterian diet has been the best decision in ma life. I did it 2years ago when I started to study abt ayurveda. since I cut off red meat complitly I became more calm and less stressed.
2 tips 4 ya: the only vitamin that you can't get from veg diet is B12. and you should take multy vitamin pills once in a while. and try to do a random blood test every 6month,searching for anemia.
and try not to place a big pressure on urself and if u crave for ur favorite meat meal! have it.otherwise this craving will grow and turn in to obsession.

Thanks for the tips! I have had a few meat cravings which I have satisfied with Bocca Burgers or the Morning Star Chik'N breasts. My husband is a big meat eater, so watching him chow down on a steak the other night was kinda hard....and I'm not even a steak fan! Tonight we are going for sushi, and its gonna be hard not eating a tuna roll! Thanks again so much!

sorry dude, I have'nt been around.
so, what did you do abt tuna roll? you know, according to my ayurvedic diet I can eat fish(sweat water fishes only) but I hate fish! anyway Confused I think the effect of fish meat on your body is not as animalistic as red meat and even chicken.

Hey! Well I was good and stuck with the veggie rolls! They really are just as good...it's just the thought of a spicey tuna roll..... its so tempting. I live on the Gulf Coast and we are constantly eating seafood so eventually I'm sure I'll cheat and have some shrimp or fish!

Hey everyone!
I've been totally vegetarian for about 3 weeks or so. I really like it b/c i dont' want to be eating my friends! I still eat dairy products and such, except for eggs, i don't really like eggs. I don't like them fried or anything like that, but i'll eat them in brownies or such. I don't like fish at all either. I hate to sound so picky but I hate fish. WEll, talk to you all later!

i was brought up vegetarian and have never eaten meat in my life. i was brought up eating fish though. i loved fish. but i gave it up when i was about 9. i wouldnt be able to kill a living thing whether it be a dog, a fish or a spider! so i thought it was hypocritical to eat fish when i wouldnt have the heart to kill it myself. it seemed sensible to be consistent so i gave it up. i miss fish though. it has been 12 years since i have had a jacket potato with tuna on top. god i drool at the very thought!!!

Vegetarian critics?
Posted: 01-28-08 20:23pm

Hey! Have any of y'all expirenced any criticms for you choice to be a vegetarian? The reason I ask is that since becoming a veg. I've been criticized and poked fun at by friends and family....Comments such as "you'll never make it past a week", (I've gone almost a month so far) "what are you some kind of hippy-dippy-earth lover now?", and on and on....Tonight my hubby and I went over to my grandparents for dinner. They cooked chicken and various veggies. After fixing my plate with veggies only, my grandmother looked at me and said"well if your doing this no meat thing for weight loss it sure isn't working"! My grandmother is always very rude like this....I'm not fat..yes I have gained a few pounds since I got married but I still wear a size 8 and that's perfectly fine with me. So anyways, I told her that "I'm not doing this for weight loss, I'm doing it to better myself and the world around me". She said that she was going to start a pool going on how long I'll make it. She informed me that "we are meat eaters and its silly to think we could/should be any different". Ugggggg!!!! I'm so mad!!!! Sorry I just had to rant and see if anyone else had/has similar problems. Ok now I'm going to have a glass of wine! Smile

oh yes, i have had much mockery thrown my way in my time! if i had a pound for every time someone saw me eating and went "oh my god the poor vegetables you're killing them!" etc etc i would be very rich.

then there's the retarded hypothetical questions, eg "so, if you were alone in a desert, right, and you had no food left and you were going to die, and then all of a sudden a plate appears in front of you and there's a steak on it, would you eat it?"

ahh memories of being a child! though you'd be surprised how often adults come up with stuff like that too!

i dont mind someone finds out i am veggie and asks me why as long as it is a genuine question and they are really interested to hear my views. most people who ask you why don't want to listen to you they just want to take the mickey out of you. i was at a houseparty a while back and there were savoury munchies being passed about and i said no thankyou, i'm veggie, and this guy just shot an awful look at me and wen't "why??!!" it wasn't even a question it was just a verbal assault!! he didn't want to hear what i had to say, he just wanted to embarrass me in front of everyone or something. i hate that. and that guy got quite an earful Very
Happy

hey, i started a veggie debate in the general debate forum, you should add your views i'd be interested in hearing them x

I eat fish from time to time but no other meat. For simplicity I will ask for a vegetarian option at a restaurant and invariably one or other of my veggie friends who happen to be there will say, 'Ah yes, but you're not a REAL vegetarian, are you?' which is just veggie fascism in my opinion.

that must be annoying! to me, although fish are still creatures, someone who eats fish can still be considered a vegetarian. fish are caught in oceans so they are free up until the time they are caught and killed, so it takes out any of the issues of cruelty associated with the inethical rearing of animals and stuff...

a 'demi vegetarian' is someone who may eat fish or chicken. i understand fish, but i have never understood why it's ok for a veggie to eat chicken. if anything that is the *worst* animal to eat because they are kept in the worst conditions imaginable. but i suppose there are those who are vegetarian not on moral grounds, but on health grounds...

I agree - and for that reason I have not eaten chicken for 16 years. I have only recently started eating fish, as a matter of fact, because I was beginning to worry about the lack of omega-3 etc in my diet. I would no longer call myself a veggie but the way other veggies carry on about my eating a small portion of lemon sole, you would think I had sold my soul to Satan. Surprised

It almost seems as though some meat eaters get deffensive when they become aware of veggie among them. My husband is great, he could care less if I ate all veggies or all meat! Other's however, are just so dang annoying...hopefully some of the critics will shut up after they see that I have made a real comitment to this, that its not just a "stupid phase".

i don't see why any attempt to make a positive change in one's life should result in ridicule. i suppose people see it the same way as if i turned round to my friends and said i was giving up drinking! they probably make fun of you because they don't think you are sincere or they don't think it will last. once they get used to the idea it'll die down i'm sure Smile

it happened to ma alot too: people who are meat eaters feel like I'm insulting them by telling that I'm a vegeterian. I don't know why exactly but I do know that when people don't undrestand some thing they say it's foolish. and some times I get this feeling that maybe they are a little bit jealous coz they can't give up meat, you know, breaking habits is not so easy!

Ah Ha! That's what I'm begining to think...maybe they feel insecure about their lack of will power.

Hi! I just read it and I am totally converted. It's been a week and I haven't had any meat or dairy. It just feels natural...I'm surprised I don't miss it at all. I am doing to be more healthy and because I couldn't bear what they do to animals...but I would really like to lose weight. I haven't yet...maybe I'm eating too much? How is it going for you? Have you stuck with it?
