Q: Health Insurance Coverage For Procedures In Foreign Countries
asked by: christyler on January 10th, 2008

Hi there,

I have gone medtrotting twice now for elective surgeries in foreign countries. In the past, I have looked into US health insurance that covers Medtrotters undergoing procedures in other countries to no avail. As I intend to travel for minor procedures again in the future, I would like to switch to an insurance provider that offers coverage in foreign countries. Does anyone know of any offered here in the US? In Europe it is common practice for insurance companies to offer this so I'm not sure what the reluctancy is here in the US.

If anyone has any ideas I would appreciate it!

I do not know of any policies in the US that will cover this. Most US policies will cover emergency procedures overseas but will not cover elective procedures. The main reason for this is that the insurance companies do not have contracted rates with foreign medical providers.

We have a friend who is seeking health care insurance coverage which will cover elective surgery in Hungary. Is there such a company? He is an anesthesiologist and has a wonderful surgical post-op suite in his private hospital, as well as US trained surgeons who would do the stateof the art surgeries.
I had heard that some plans will allow surgery for hip replacement or knee replacements or open heart surgery in foreign countries.

Travel/Medical Insurance
I found a company called globalsurance.com
They offer insurance for travellers seeking surgeries abroad.
