Q: cannot fully eliminate stool from my colon

and no doctor knows why.

Simply put, are there any drugs or herbs that will help me eliminate all the stool from my colon?

And, if you're the type to that likes mysteries, here are a lot of my symptoms, and everything ive tried, and everything i've noticed. i challenge you to do what no other doctor has been able to do (and ive seen like 30 over the past two years). Tell me what could be wrong with me based on the following information. and if you can't, at least answer some or all of my many questions, whch might help me eventually find out what's wrong.

Thank you SO much. My life is wasting away. I need someone to show me that miracles are possible. Here it is - everything.

Two years ago, I tried to have a bowl movement, and although some stool did come out, for some reason it felt like some stool was still stuck in my colon. Ever since that fateful night, every time I have a bowl movement, I feel as I cannot fully eliminate my bowels. no longer how long i sit there, how hard i push, i cannot eliminate the stool from my bowels (colon, most likely). Ever since then, it's hard for me to tell when I have to have a bowell movement, and when I do, I never feel like I'm finished, or refreshed.
No doctor has been able to figure out my problem.

I want to keep this brief. So, facts:

- Before this digestive problem happened, I was only sleeping 3-4 hours a night, for about a month straight.

- Before my problem started, I was under a LOT LOT LOT of anxiety and stress for year after year after year leading up to this bowel problem.

- I am allergic to gluten, dairy, sugar, eggs, the universe, etc etc etc, but I stopped eating EVERYTHING i was allergic to (very dilligently) for like 6 months, and that didn't help at all, except I did feel *slightly* better after going off of gluten (which i did a month before going off of everything else), though the problem of not being to eliminate the stool from my bowels (or the illusion of stool stuck in my bowels), remained.

- While urinating, i feel more relaxed, and rectal area feels better.

- When i take a bath, my rectal area feels better, and i feel more relaxed.

- i am chronically fatiqued and depressed

- The discomfort and pain caused by the feeling of having something stuck in my bowels makes it so i never feel relaxed, unless I am taking methadone or klonopin (which i just started recently).

- I was diagnosed with lyme disease and bartonella, but am being treated for bartonella with sepra and revampin (spelling), and im almost done with the month trial, and i feel worse than when i originally went on it.

- most docs dont think bartonella could cause my problems

- when i dont sleep all night, or i dont sleep very much, my lower gut / rectal area feels worse, and my perpetually runny nose gets even worse.

- when i get out to exercise and start running around, the constant sensation of feeling like i have to have a bowel movement almost goes away enntirely, though i can still notice it a little bit.

- this bowel/digestive problem originally started about a week after i baseball season ended. i was in high school, and i played three sports, all year round, and we ran and exercised a lot. then basbeball stopped; i didnt exercise for a week, and this problem started on that forementioned night when i tried to have a bowel movement. I have tried exercising daily for weeks, or a month even, but the problem does not go away.

- my bowels and mood both feel significanly better (though the feeling of never being able to completely evacuate my bowels remains) when i take klonopin (which is in the benzo drug class; it's like valium, or any of those others).

- the feeling of never knowing when i will have to have a bowel movement, and always sort of feeling like i have to go, prevents me from participating in any outdoor activities, or from having any type of social life. i lie on the couch and watch television all day long, and i have been doing so for the last four months, since the pain and discomfort has increased.

-the first time i took klonopin was because i have fear of flying, and i had to fly to europe. i took about 12mg over the course of 10 hours, and i fellt great; i didnt even notice my bowels; i fell asleep right as the plane was taking off. when i woke up on the plane, i still didnt even notice my bowels, and when i had to have a bowel movement on the plane, i didnt even care. this feeling lasted another day, but the feeling of always feeling like i have to have a bowel movement came back to me the next day. i was still in better spirits that normal, but the sensation had returned to my bowels. about five days after that, my bowels started getting even worse than they had before.

-before i ever took klonopin, i could usually eat, have a bowel movement about an hour later, and - although it didnt feel like id completely eliminated my bowels - i could still go out and do activities because i knew i wouldnt have to have another bowel movement until i ate again. so, i would go out and just not eat, and id be fine to do stuff. about a week after taking that huge dose of klonopin, i would eat a meal, have a bowel movement, but i would feel worse after taking the bowel movement than i usuallly felt (preklonopin) after taking a bowel movement. instead of having to eat again before having another bowel movement, i would have to have another bowel movement three hours later, despite not eating anything, and then another one three hours later, despite not having eaten anything more. all this time, it felt like there was a warm, boiling type feelingbelow my belly button, and since that say, whenever i feel that wya, if i push hard down on my belly button or abdomen, it feels really sorry, and if i push my hands back and forth over my stomach, roughly, like kneading dough almost, i can like liquid moving around in my intestins, and grumbling, et cetera.

- now that i dont have the freedom of eating, having a bowel movement, and not having to worry about having another one until i eat again, i can barely leave my house at all because when i do have bowel movements, they ussually take about 30 minutes (mostly because i never know when im done having a bowel movement, because it always feels like i have to go more, so even if nothing more seems to be coming out after 10 minutes, i still have to push for another 10-15 to make certain that nothing more is coming out, and then wipe). no one wants to have a 30 minute bowel movement in public. i cant go on a date if theres a possibility of that happening. i cant join a sports team. etc etc.

- I am scheduled to see a motility specialist, have a urinary test where they stick cameras and tubes up the whole in me p***** while im conscious. im getting a spect scan for my brain because...

- i suffer from a lot of depression and anxiety, and they wwant to know what kind of anti-depressants would be best for me

-im having a cat scan of my spinal cord to see if i have a tethored cord

-I got tested for the viruses that cause chronic fatique

-i went to a pelvic floor physical therapist who says my pelvic floor muscles are slightly tighter than normal, though not significantly.

- I will probably try SOMA in the near future to see if muscle relexants help my bowels work better

So.

My questions:

******What else should I be trying?******

******What do you think I have?*******

******What other tests should I be doing?*******

******If my problem is all caused by stress, what drug or herb would completely relieve me of stress for a long enough period of time for my bowels to go back to normal?*******

******If my problem isn't caused my stress, what is it caused by?*****

******If no one can figure out the cause of my problem, are there at least any drugs that will help me eliminate my colon when I have a bowel movement? Every time I go to the bathrom I know, 100% positive, that, even though I push as hard as I can, there is fecal matter still in my colon, that will not come out******

******Are there any drugs or herbs, other than opiates, and benzos (like klonopin, valium, etc), that will help me with either pain, euphoria, or insomnia?***** (besides 250mg ambien, which doesnt work for me because im in too much physical pain for somethng that weak to put me to sleep most of the time)

******Although Im certain the problem is that stool is getitng stuck in my colon, could it be possible that it's getting stuck in my upper intenstine, and not my colon? Even though it wont come out, and sometimes when I push really hard, just a little drop of stool will drip out of my anus, could it be that that the stool is trapped in the small instestine? Or maybe the sphincter (spelling...? i mean whatever seperates the small and large intestine) isn't working properly? maybe it's not letting the stool through like it should? Because when i am having a bowl movement, I can feel some stool stuck somewhere in my intenstines, and I will push, and push, and push, and no matter how hard I push, nothing will come out. Then, all of a sudden, I will something kind of let go in my intestines, and then a bunch of stool will come out really easily, but then it will hold up, and ill push hard, but nothing will come. and then something just lets go, and it all comes out, very easily. Could it be that the whole that connects the small and large intenstins isn't opening and closing like it should be? And why would that happen? And what drug would help it function normally?*****

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE. IF YOU HAVE ***ANY*** SUGGESTIONS, AND ***ANY*** ANSWERS TO ANY OF MY QUESTIONS, PLEASE ANSWER. MY LIFE IS WASTING AWAY, AND UNTIL SOMEBODY MIRACULOUSLY FIGURES OUT WHATS WRONG, OR AT LEAST HOW TO HUSH MY SYMPTOMS, THE WORLD WILL KEEP SPINNING, TIME WILL KEEP TICKING, AND MY LIFE WILL WASTE AWAY.

PLEASE HELP.

emo, have you found any solutions?
I have the exact same problem going for about two years. It is a horrible life. I've tried rectal biofeedback, so many motility tests, still no answers, and horrible pain, cannot evacuate or ever feel relaxed *ever*. Kolonopins stop working after about 6 months...

please let me know if you've had any luck with any therapies

I also have to add... When ever i feel like that and i tell my mom she said it could be a tumor that blocks the passage of the stool and makes it harder to pass out. You should really get a colonoscopy and a Rectal Examination. Maybe even an endoscopy. I am getting those tests done to confirm celiacs and rule out other diseases and what not.

Sorry I don't have any more ideas.. But I hope this helped a little.

Hi everyone,

I've felt similar symptoms the previous summer and I went to a doctor to get some help. Before the visit i resorted to laxatives. The cause of my symptoms I think was really bad eating habits in a short time period. High-fatty diet with barely any fiber intake. I had my problem after a camping trip...which was like a binge on junk food and alcohol. I started the day i came back from the trip. It was so bad to the point i needed laxatives in order to have a bowel movement. And my stomach always felt too full no matter how little i ate. There felt like there was no flow through my digestive system. It was horrible. But I did get better....

I got rectal exam and my doctor said I was suffering from constipation. I thought she was wrong because it felt like i had something blocking my bowel movements. I told her this but she insisted it was constipation. So I followed her instructions and I got better within a month. Here's what she told me:

Constantly using Laxatives can damage your ability to have bowel movements and lead to serious problems when your grow older. (So if you are using laxatives to have bowel movements right now i highly suggest you talk to a doctor and go through the following instructions)

First you want to make your stool as soft as possible and eat the correct diet and stay healthy. I was told to eat nothing too solid or heavy for a week. So a good thing to eat would be like; macaroni, soup, noodles, pasta etc.

Secondly, try not to eat cheese or anything that could promote constipation.

Thirdly, and the most important part, eat a fruit with EVERY meal. My doctor told me this will help it move through your bowels. You are basically training your digestive system to process food correctly again. The best fruit to eat is an apple. Think fruits and veggies with your diet, and try to make it a habit even between meals.

Fourthly, drink lots of fluids. Water is the best choice.

This may take a while before you get results. But it worked for me. You have to resist the urge to eat a full meal if you were like me, and feel like your stomach gets full too easily. Resort to small portions at first, while still eating fruit with each ration.

For further reading:
http://www.gicare.com/pated/edtgs01.htm
This article gives basic info on high fiber diets and how it helps your digestive system. It suggests different foods that help.

I came to this forum because I repeated my mistake, by eating unhealthy, and i was wondering if anyone had the same problems as me. Ever since that first incident, my digestive system seems to only work best when I'm eating fruits fairly consistent with each meal. I can't stress enough how eating a healthy fiber diet can help you. I'm using the same diet treatment again. So far it's working well.

I hope this helps

Sounds like you're answering some of your own qs.
1. Klonopin makes you relax in such a way as it's a neuroleptic. So of course you aren't going to think about BMs as much.

2. Stress does play a part on your BMs because you yourself just said so. Razz you stress about it daily (so do many) and it plays out in your...well...toilet habits.

3. Activity makes a difference. A bath relaxes muscles, working your muscles loosens them (ie exercise) and such. So try walking after a meal.

4. Change your diet. Instead of high fiber foods, go for easy to digest foods and pysillum tablets perhaps.

5. Yes there are things that can cleanse your colon that you ingest orally, but they're temporary and you'll probably get addicted to them right away.

6. How can you have seen that many docs and not had a proper exam? Get to a GI specalist.

7. I think you probably do have a problem with depression or anxiety...but if you were allergic to gluten, you'd be seeing a GI specalist already and you'd be shitting all the time. Gluten allergies are rare. You probably just can't tolerate it well. Or, if you said your problems were only helped *some*, then maybe you have no gluten intolerance...you just can't eat heavy breads and pastas. Razz

8. Finally, it could be that you have a slow-emptying stomach. Do you get full pretty quickly?

9. Again, go see a GI specialist and have proper tests done. That's what you need. TESTING.

Good luck. In the meantime, DO NOT load up on lots of fruits and veggies as you'll really put your stomach in a fit. What doesn't make you go? What does? Drink water, plain, at room temperature. Two glasses in the AM, slow and steady, and drink your water a glass at a time. Not to fast as to get the burps, but don't sip it, either.

I find that I work best on a plain diet. Plain chicken. Plain fish. Vanilla ice cream (no corn syrup). Water. No bread (or minimal). Prune juice at night when I have to. Baby food, even.

Yeah, I rarely poo but I'm not putting in a lot of heavy stuff that makes me feel it, either.

Otherwise my 5 ft 2 frame would be filled up with an extra 7 lbs of colonic crap that makes me resort to sodium phosphate.

And seriously, if you can drink your meals, more power to you. You're male, so you need more calories...but boy, if you can afford it, try some protein shakes and a juicer. For me, if it isn't fully cooked, pureed, blended, or comes in a scoop on a hot summer day I'm probably not interested right now.

If stuff is clogged, don't force more crap down the drain!!

cannot fully eliminate stool
Have you ever gotten and answer? Has it gotten worse with any other symptoms for you? I could not believe I have searched for anyone with similar symptoms and never found anything till now. I have the same problem as Emo except with some more severe symptoms that include blacking out when I strain to have the bowel movement and can only half way evacuate. Then I have no choice but keep trying to at least finish. I spend at least two to three hours hours a day, 30-45 completely exhausting mins at a time, in the rest room. Life has stopped for me to. if I want to go out in public I plan an hour in the rest room first then go through pain and discomfort until I can get home. I try to make sure I do not eat or drink if I will be out. I usaully feel it's just not worth going anywhere. My family gets frustrated always waiting on me. I have severe headaches and pain while straining and blacking out as well, and end up in a cold sweat. At least three times a week I get severe cramps right before an urgent feeling of needing a bowel movement, then I only can go a little even with the cramps. I have had colonoscomy full and partial, and pelvic ct scan. I have been through cardiology tests, and now am supposed to have an anal mamomatry test. Which tests your muscle abilities to push out bowel movements. I do not believe it will help at all. I have many other symptoms but was hoping someone might have an answer,as some of the post were a little older.

Cannot fully eliminate stool
This sounds all too familiar. I was told by doctors and relatives (my father has digestive problems) that this was just constipation. I had constipation before, and that was like I actually couldn't go. Then after a week or two, I was fine. Shortly after that, I felt like I do right now. I was just in the washroom for half an hour, and some came out, but i still feel like there's some left, and no matter how hard I try, I too cannot get rid of it. When I stand up I believe i can feel it inside my rectum - very uncomfortable. My social life has suffered greatly because of this problem. I can't stay out with friends because I feel sick and uncomfortable. Sex with my girlfriend is suffering. And being stressed out about this problem itself probably doesn't help.
I too suffer from depression, and i don't get very much physical activity. Could my depression, anxiety and lack of exercise be the culprit? This has been going on for at least 2-3 months. I also wondered if this could be caused by prescription drugs. In August, I had all 4 of my wisdom teeth removed which put me in a great deal of pain. I was on quite a bit of medication, and since some of the pills made me ill, I was forced to switch twice. The first batch of meds were codeine/acetaminophen. I found i was allergic to codeine, so it made me very sick. After much nausea and vomiting, i was given a different medication. I honestly cannot remember it now, as the tube has gone missing. Those weren't relieving the pain. So I was given Novo-Ketorolac (Ketorolac Tromethamine). Another medication i was given was Apo-Dexamethasone. I believe this is the medication i took once, and did not take again because it made me sick and didn't relieve pain. I know some or all of these prescriptions can cause constipation, but could the problem really persist for months? I don't know what to do anymore. Any suggestions would be appreciated greatly.

hi
am 18 and am having the exact prob as you since a year... it's really hard, i can no more stay out with my friends for too long because am always anxious that i'll have to go to the toilet every 15 mins.. i've just had my exams (17 papers in all), thank god all went ok, coz i was on medication.. but i would prefer to know the cause rather than treating it... am as if paralysed, i cannot go anywhere and this is makin me stressed more than ever before... i thought the problem was due to exam stress but exams are over now since the past 2 months and the problem is still the same... what is even more annoying is that when am at home, the problem is 'not there' but the moment i set out of the house, i've to rush back to the toilet again and this goes on till i return back... but when am at home, i don;t suffer from it... ;(

Had that too
My doctor did a test to test the sphinter, muscles around the rectum. 1/2 of mine had no feeling at all and thus it is very hard to eliminate all the stool.

There are things they can do. See a proctologist.

cannot fully eliminate stool from my colon
I am the one of the first posts on this subject and have been following all of the responses, but I have not responded in a while, I have been doing all of the research I can. I know that we all have some common bond of more than not being able to fully go to the bathroom. Something is wrong with us and the number of people wit these symptoms is growing. I also believe that are many more of us who have never shared this symptom due to embarrassment or doubts. Since I last wrote I have seen a cardiologist-because of the severe ankle swelling and blackouts when straining, an Integrated Medicine Specialist, an Endocrinologist, and an MD. I have made some progress after almost 2 years of tests. I have almost no Vitamin d/calcium in my blood count at 5. I have severe Iron Deficiency Anemia, and low Cortisol. I also have a screwed up white blood cell count with infection showing in my lymph nodes and blood for almost 2 years. Now I have an enlarged Spleen, and Gallbladder. I also have embedded Gallstones. I am waiting for tests results today that will then be given to a surgeon for evaluating the best course of action. I am very angry that it took a basically holistic doctor and MD after over a year of tests and specialists to find this. I live in pain and discomfort all of the time. I am also being checked for Celiac disease. Based upon many of our symptoms, this totally makes sense. I strongly suggest checking into this for each of you. As far as what may be wrong I have been given many scenarios from a type of leukemia to Celiac, to a combo of several diseases. What ever is causing this to all of us, it’s either a new disease or syndrome not known of yet, or a new symptom for an old disease. I want to know the why and what. What common factors do we each have? I saw that one young lady took Phentermine, anyone else that has taken a type of amphetamines? Does anyone else blackout when they bear down for a bowel movement? Sorry to be graphic. Does anyone else have swollen legs or ankles? History of thyroid problems or disease. Weight issues from a medical cause or other? I am lucky to currently have a doctor who really loves to solve mysteries but I am sure we all have had the bad experiences with Doctors who make you think maybe you are crazy or the most stupid response from doctors to me, depression is possibly causing your symptoms. The only depression I have experienced is from years of giving viles of blood, having radioactive scans, being poked and prodded and the doctors still scratching their heads. The only depression comes from having no quality of life and feeling your life is over and you are equal to an 90 year old while still in your 30-40's. I hope everyone will respond with more details that may link all of us with some common traits. I am not confident in leaving it anymore to doctors to solve this. Unless a doctor happens to suffer from this, the odds are not in our favor.

It's been almost 4 years now and I am still regular.
I had the same problem about not being able to go to the bathroom I visited with my chiropractor and he helped me out a lot He told me that I was out in a few spots in my lower back. He popped me in and now I can use the reastroom without any problems. If it feels like I can't go very easy I will go to him and he will pop me back in. At first I thought it sounded crazy but now I love the feeling of going to the bathroom I don't stress out like I used to because I thought I was going to pass out.

Wow, Ive been suffering from this too and have most of the same symptoms the OP has.

I play soccer so this gets really irritating and painful too. Unlike the OP, when I do physical activities such as train and play, my stomach bloats up and I start to get pains that almost make me want to just drop to the ground and curl up in the fetal position....but...

To In The Making, Is your pain mostly under your right rib and also feel like a knife in the center of your chest. I just found out in addition to the rest of my problems that I have an enlarged spleen and galbladder with stones lodged in it. You can be healthy and active and have an enlraged galbladder and stones. It also causes severe pain in the lower back on each side just above the waist and the galbladder creates painful gases in the upper abdomen. You should get checked. Galbladder's also can run hereditarily in families so you may want to see if anyone has had to have theirs out. You never know what will set off an attack but physical activity and diet can.
