Here is my question that I need help with if anyone could. I had an irregular pap come back, we did the biopsy and found cancer. I had the treatment 4-5 years ago and everything has come back normal since then. My only concern is fertility now. We are starting to talk about children and wondering if the treatment I had in the past will effect my fertility. We used the freezing cervical cancer treatment 4-5 years ago. Confused

Did you have cancer or did you have high grade dysplasia? High grade dysplasia is not cancer. It could become cancer if left untreated - but it is not cancer. A common misconception is that dysplasia is cancer.

It is unlikely that having the bad cells frozen off your cervix would have caused any fertility issues in the long term. That treatment one of the least likely to cause major scarring. That would be the ultimate issue - cervical scarring - which could cause a weakening of the cervix. It would be possible to get pregnant, carrying the child would be difficult though.

A lot of women have multiple conizations done on their cervix and can still have children. If you have been keeping up with your pap smears and everything is fine - one cryotherapy 4 or 5 years ago should not affect any fertility.

Good luck!!

Cryotherapy (freezing the site with carbon dioxide or nitrous oxide) is process of destroying the abnormal cells on the surface of the cervix that allows eventual growth of new healthy cells.

There haven't been found clinical correlation between Infertility and obstetrical problems and cervical cryotherapy.

Good luck with conception!
