"Current medical status: Diagnosis for Panic disorder and Chronic Anxiety Back in March of 2007, I was sitting on my bed with my winter coat still on and debateing some issue or another with another family member when I started to feel very hot and my heart started to pound and it raced quite fast for an hour or more and remained high ( above 100 ) for the rest of the day. at one point the rate was about 170 bpm. Now this happened several more times. And similiar each time, A high rate above 140 which lasted for a couple of hours then came back down to below 100 and then back into the 70's and 80 's which are my norm."
According to the symptoms you describe (sudden tachycardia and increased blood pressure) and given the data about sinus rhythm, you could be experiencing a panic attack. Panic attacks are a kind of anxiety disorder. But before pinning anxiety for your symptoms, all the necessary medical examinations should be done to exclude possible heart disease(s) like paroxysmal supraventricular tachycardia. A 24-hour ECG-monitoring (“halter”) should be performed to diagnose the condition.
Metoprolol is a beta-blocker and is often used for treating supra-ventricular tachycardia, including sinus tachycardia. Metoprolol doesn’t damage the heart but helps it. Xanax (alprazolam) is an anxiolitic drug and can help to calm anxiety in cases of panic attack. But Xanax can not be used for long term treatment of panic attacks because it creates dependency. Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors SSRIs can be used for long-term treatment of panic attacks. Psycho-therapy can be also very useful.
