Q: CAT scan or MRI for recurrant headaches

Hi everyone! I have been having headaches for as long as I can remember. I am 32 years old and have went to the doctor recently to find out why I am getting more headaches now more than ever. I've started to think that maybe I have high blood pressure. But my bp always seems to be fine, either normal or norm/high. Docs and nurses say nothing to worry about. I have always been under a lot of stress, (who isn't, right?), but I want to take something for it now. She had put me on Effexor XR and scheduled for an MRI, just to make sure that everything was fine. The Effexor XR made me really jittery so the nurses said to stop taking it and wait for the doc to call me back. Any opinions on what meds to try?
Back to the headaches- It seems like most everybody here on the forums have been getting CAT scans or CTs (not sure if that's the same thing). I've had MRIs done before on other parts of my body, but was just wondering why she chose an MRI over the other tests? Does anyone know the difference? The headaches I've been having lately are waking me up with severe pain across the top of my head and I feel nauseated pretty much the whole day.
Thanks so much in advance to anyone that responds.

Hey mom123!

In a similar boat myself. Not sure what Effexor XR is, never got put on that one myself. The medication my doctor started me on was a small dose of Topamax to take morning and night. I'm also on many others, but hopefully you're not at that point! My headaches sound different than yours, but make sure if you have pain, you don't take "sorry I don't know for an answer". It could be as simple as sinuses or tension, but make sure you get an answer.

I do believe the CT is the same as a CAT. However, I just came from a MRI tonight and it is amazing the differences between a CT and a MRI.

The CT breaks things down into cross sections of the body (kind of like taking an apple and cutting it into several slices, then looking at each slice to see what's in each section.)

The MRI shows you internal "parts" on a 3D or even 4D level. I was able to get a copy of the MRI on disk before I left the imaging center tonight (you should try that, if anything it's just cool to look at). You actually see your BRAIN! It's freaky! There's also ways to see your nerves, arteries, muscles, etc., but I can't figure that out quite yet - guess that's where the degree comes in!

Hope this helps you! Smile

Thank you, Serinity08. That did help. She did give me an actual migraine medication, but after I got home and looked at the info sheets that came with the meds, I noticed that it said the two meds that were precribed to me were not supposed to be taken together. Kinda scarey. I'm still waiting for the doc to call me back about that. So how did your MRI turn out? Or are you still waiting for the results. Keep me posted.
Thanks again!

Back Spasm (flutters)
I have been experiencing fluttering on the left side of my back for about a month now. It's becoming very annoying. I don't have any pain, but the fluttering is constant now, about every 10-15 mins, a small spasm/flutter would occur. Should I be concerned? I don't have a lot of stress in my life, just average crap.

Also, I take antacids everyday starting around noon. Maximum that I've taken in a day is 6. Should I be concerned about this? Why do I experience indigestion/heartburn on a daily basis without even eating anything?
