hearing loss, headaches, face pain

I dislocated my jaw several years ago and since then my bite has never been the same, but my dentist says everything is normal. I've had tmj for awhile now but just recently it started acting up. I lost some hearing in my right ear (my ear specialist says it's from tmj), i'm getting tension headaches, tooth pain (very rarely though), and now the side of my face in front of my ear is incredibly painful. I have a dentist made mouth guard/splint, and my symptoms have not improved. I'm going to see my dentist to get a referral to a tmj specialist. I'm sorta worried that I'll need to get my jaw realigned, and worse than that they'll tell me nothing is wrong. Do you guys have any similar experiences that you can share? And what do you recommend for pain? I've been taking Aleve but it's not helping at all.

You might ask your doctor or dentist if they will prescribe a muscle relaxant like Zanaflex or Flexeril and/or Valium or Xanax to take at bed time. Vicoprofen can sometimes be helpful but not always or for everyone.

Do make sure that you have images taken such as MRI and Tomography, even tho MRIs are not always helpful and Tomography will not show tissues. They still can be useful particularly if taken with state of the art machines and the person reading the images is particularly skillful.

And by the way, officially there is no such thing as a TMJ Specialist. I found it interesting when I found out that both the Dental and Medical "Powers-to-Bes" will not recognize TMJ as a specialty. It's just a dental "issue." Grrrrrrr!

Please use lots of MOIST heat directly on the jaw joints. When using ice, only apply it for 15 minutes at a time and always have it wrapped in a towel of sorts.

I hope and pray that you get the help you need soon. Please let us know how you are doing.

God bless...
