Can someone with the necessary expertise inform me of the medical maladies that are associated with an overjet or jetbite? If not, can anyone direct me to a web site that can give me background on this dental condition? Thanking you in advance for your help!!!

Depending on the severity of his over-jet, he may have trouble biting his food with his front teeth.

I would take him to an orthodontist and see what they recommend. Sounds as if he needs braces.
