Q: Alcohol cocaine and smoking when pregnant

I'm 18 years old and I'm about 5 weeks pregnant. I'm so scared about it! My number one choice for what to do is get an abortion because I drank alcohol, snorted coke, I smoke cigarettes everyday and I drink caffeine many times a day. (Before I was totally sure that I was pregnant I did all of these things) .. anyways, I think abortion is the best choice because of birth defects the child might suffer from. Yet I feel really unconfortable getting an abortion! (I'm pro-choice, but I don't feel like it's right for me).. Opinions? Suggestions? They are really really appreciated!

It's normal to be nervous before making a big decision like this. Women who decide to keep their babies or give them up for adoption go through the same thing.

My honest opinion? Get an abortion and move on with your life. You obviously don't lead the type of lifestyle necessary to care for an infant or child and you're very young.

if you're into all these things.. its going to be really hard to stop. and stop cold turkey. you will probably be best off getting an abortion. I've gotten one and will talk to you about it if you have ANY questions or want to talk about it. you can PM me.

good luck

i really dont think it would be hard for me to quit these things. i tried coke once & i don't think i will ever do it again. it was a one time thing- i'm not ddicted. i drank on new years eve, i could go without alcohol too. and cigarettes and caffeine i could give up during my pregnancy.... but has the damage already definitley been done to the baby?

Definitely? No. Possibly? Yes. You will need ultrasounds to monitor the pregnancy if you're interested in continuing it.

Even if you'd never tried those things, drug and alcohol use is just one of very very many issues with you deciding to be a parent.

im pretty sure your kid will be just fine. Other than snorting coke I did all the above until i was 7 weeks with my daughter and 8 weeks with my son. (i refused to believe i was pregnant with my son and i was just getting off bc with my daughter and didnt think i was pregnant) anyways they are both healthy toddlers with no ill effects. I think you would have to continue doing these things to cause your baby any real damage

O and I know several people who smoked cigarettes their entire pregnancy (the doctor advised them to cut back but not quit becauseof the withdrawls their bodies would have could b more dangerous for the baby) and they ALL have healthy normal babies

Quitting smoking does not cause dangerous withdrawal during pregnancy, that's bologna. Quitting smoking helps your baby, it doesn't harm it.

During the first six weeks of pregnancy, your baby's neural tube is forming. Drinking during this time can damage it and cause brain damage, for example Fetal Alcohol Syndrome. There are a lot of people who drank before they knew they were pregnant and their baby turned out just fine....that doesn't mean she has no worries, however.

I'm always amazed to hear that people's doctors advise them NOT TO QUIT SMOKING (???!!!) during pregnancy due to stress. I would love to know where those particular doctors got their medical degree and why people think anyone would believe that!

As far as the OP goes, you have a lot to think about. Make sure you are right with whatever decision you make.

Good luck.

As long as you quit those things NOW, your baby would probably be okay. Since you are five weeks pregnant, that means you only conceived about three weeks ago. Doing those things during your pregnancy is a horrible thing to do, but many many women out there have done the same because they did not know they were pregnant yet and their kids turned out okay. As long as you quite RIGHT NOW, your kid would be fine.

However, could you stop all of these things for life? Children with drunken parents are unstable (a few drinks sometimes is okay, but not all the time, and especially not when you are breastfeeding. it could be passed onto the baby that way). Children suffer from second hand smoke and get terrible lungs from it. It's essentially handing your child a cigarette whenever you smoke. I'm sure you'd also know why coke is horrible , so I won't even go into that.

Would you be able to raise this child if you wanted to? Do you have the money? Education? Who is the father?

If not, I believe you are right in wanting an abortion. If you don't think you are ready to handle the responsibilities yet at this age then there is nothing wrong with it. You are still really early in your pregnancy and have time to think things over.

There is also always adoption.

Good luck with your decision.

The first trimester is when the most damage can be done. Also, smoking causes less oxygen to reach the fetus, so you are suffocating it, little by little.

Like somebody already said, if you stop it immediately, there shouldn't be anything to worry about. I did all of those things before I found out I was pregnant, but I'm now almost 31 weeks gone & all of my scans and check-ups have shown a healthy baby. And before I get lectured, I have stopped those things for good now, I wont have them again when I've had my baby, he's the most important thing in my life now & nothing will change that.

As long as she stops doing these things now then there's every chance the baby will be fine. There's no need to write the foetus off just yet - unless she really doesn't want to keep it.

Right if you want this kid or think you could take on the role of motherhood then i cant see why its wrong to do so. i know alot of people including me who have taken coke and arent hooked although somepeople say you can be addicted straight away.

smoking is easy to give up when its for something lol its an in the head adiction. and drinkin well everyone drinks at new year lol.
just give it up just now you wont have done enough damage to have a baby with defect at the worst it will be dislexic lol.

xxxxxxx

If you are willing to quit all of those cold turkey... TODAYYYY! not this weekend, not next week... NOW... and are willing to be a mother... then go to your doctor... make appointments and major decisions about the child you are carrying. If you are un willing to have an abortion. Be Smart now. Start taking your prenatal pills... and be FULLLY honest with your doctor. If you are unwilling to discuss your actions with your doctor or a nurse...then I would be worried! But you need to make an active decision to remove yourself from the lifestyle you are currently in.

the human body can with stand alot of abuse, and bounce right back.
one of my older friends in her like 30's had gone on a cruise and drank ALOT and she didnt even kno she was pregnant but she has a perfectly healthy baby boy. Smile

AND also --this isnt supporting the use of any drugs or alcohol-- but there are alot of celebs that are also out there who have used drugs *cough Nicole Ricci* and have a healthy baby. i mean come on that girl was a walking health hazard! eating disorder, cocaine and heroine use and has a healthy baby.
But again not supporting drug use while pregnant just stating a point...

plus you werent into that stuff for a long time you said its a one time thing you did, it could have a bit of an affect on the baby, but if you are choosing to keep the baby, you should really talk to your doctor about the things you did and when your a little farther along they now have equipment that can actually tell you if your baby has birth defects or mental retardation and other disabilities.
