Q: Bulimic Baby?
asked by: Katrinadoodle on January 8th, 2008

Okay, I know my almost-3 week old isn't actually bulimic, but the past few nights she has been eating until she pukes. I give her 3 ounces like I always do, but when she's done she cries and chews on her hands like she does when she's hungry. I give her another 2 ounces of formula, and she's fine and goes to sleep... and then maybe 5 minutes later pukes everywhere.

I burp her after she drinks about an ounce and then let her finish eating, and I burp her after she eats, so I don't think it's gas... and if I don't feed her more she screams. Last night I didn't give in and give her more formula until it was time for her next feeding, and she screamed for those three hours. And then as soon as I gave her 4 ounces, she went to sleep.

Help?

This is actually pretty normal in newborns. Their digestive tracks are under-developed and it can cause spitting up and sometimes projectile vomiting. Something you can try, apart from burping her, is make sure she sleeps at an incline. Either let her sleep in her carseat or swing/bouncer, or roll up a towel and put it under one side of her crib mattress, so that her head is always higher than her bottom.

I'll try that tonight.... I actually didn't notice that she only throws up at night, when she's in her crib. She's fine during the day when she's in her swing.

Yeah, the valve between the esophagus and the stomach is usually underdeveloped and goes nuts. My daughter was projectile vomiting like on that Exorcist movie (except it wasn't green) until we started putting her at an incline. It might not completely solve it, but it should help.

Kaylee used to do that too but I had her in a bassinette for a while so I just did what Laura said with the towels, but used receiving blankets. Kaylee slept in her swing & carseat quite a few times for that reason though!

u could also try giving her the paci instead of more formula for like 30 mins so thefirst couple ounces have time to digest. liam vomitted the first year of his life after he ate cuz his lil flap wasnt closing. it eventually healed but some kids require surgery if they dont gain weight

i agree with Suzy.. even tho they ACT like they are still hungry, its because their tummy's haven't settled enough to notice they are full. only give her 3-4 ounces MAX and then give it about 10 minutes afterwards to settle.

kristen does that
she will have 4 ounces and then she starts chewing on her hand
i put the passey in her mouth and she takles it
and when she doesnt i just hold it gently into her mouth and then she does take it
you cant over feed them or they throw it all up and you just have to feed them again

She hates the paci... she won't take it. If I hold it in her mouth she gags on it, and as soon as I take my hand away she spits it out.

I do wait a bit to give her more formula, usually about 20 minutes. But she doesn't stop crying... like I said, she went three hours last night! I think it is the not being inclined thing, because it only happens at night. She takes four or 5 ounces fine during the day.

Yeah. I've seen two doctors, the first said to limit her to only an ounce at a time, NO MORE than an ounce and a half. I though she was nuts, and asked the second doctor at Jayden's 2 week checkup and she said it was fine.

She took an ounce at a time in the hospital, two ounces when she was a week old, three to four when she was a week and a half, and now four to five at two and a half weeks.

id getb a second opinion
because that much might be makeing her tummy way too full. then she throws it up and shes hungry again cuz her tummy will be empty. that might be the problem. or maybe even switching formula might help? what is she on now?

Oni was drinking a lot at a young age.

ALL Dr's are going to have different opinions.

You could see 7 Dr's in one day, and they will ALLLL say something different!!!

Try inclining her. Oni used to puke at night too.
I put blankets UNDER her mattress to incline it...it worked WONDERS!!
