There are several kinds of migraines.
there are ocular migraines which are
characterized by visual disturbances like
you have described, along with an almost
euphoric feeling. Once this goes away,
you are back to normal. If after the
visual disturbances you experience a
headache on one side of head accompanied
with nausea or vomitting, that is a
classic migraine. I used to get a lot of
these, but as I have gotten older they
have become much less of a probelm. When
I get mine, it begins in the left eye with
a small pixel-like square in the lower
left hand corner of my field of vision.
Following that, the pixels seem to
spreadacross my visual field. Eventually
it becomes some sort of reverse tunnel
vision and then it dissipates. Almost
always, this is followed by the
semi-hemispheric headache of gargantuan
proportions that cause me to vomit if not
treated during the visual phase. I have
tried many medications, bu Midrin works
for me and after several hours I am able
to return to some of my normal activities.
I feel a little spacy, but that's it.
Occasionally, I will have the visual
symptoms but no headache which I feel like
I just got a get out of jail free card. A
doctor can help you diagnose these and
find an appropriate medication for you.
Good luck.

Seeing "lights" Posted: 01-30-08 20:19pm
I've had migraines since age 14. I always
see "Christmas lights" and hear a
whistling sound in one ear that signals
the beginning of a migraine. The last few
years, I get the lights and sounds then
no, or a very manageable headache. I'd
see a neurologist for a work up and to get
your questions answered.
RE: hearing the heartbeat in your ears .
. . I believe it's a form of tinnitis,
like ringing in the ears. I've had it for
years. The docs did an ENT work up and
vertigo testing. Nothing was found and
they said not to worry.
Soooooooooo . . . when you see the
neurologist, bring up the heartbeat.
Good luck!

Nods...
I get precisely the same. The headache is
usually not that bad, but the visual
disturbance is really distracting and
irretating. Mine sometimes lasts up to an
half an hour...but then again, it doesn't
happen all that often.

To add...ktthefreak...I always thaught it
is normal to see "blotches" when you look
at a bright light...or is it just the
migraine part that is the problem...
