waiting period for OraQuick blood test
Posted: 01-07-08 21:19pm

Hello,

I know I am completely paranoid about HIV testing and HIV in general and tend to over-react. But can someone please answer this question for me? I had an OraQuick blood test about 12 1/2 weeks after possible risky behavior. I was drunk and can't really remember what happened. I know. I know that 12 weeks is considered three months, but I was tested like 2 days before the three month date.

I've been reading that you should wait until after three months, and I am now freaking myself out that I didn't wait long enough. I was so close though that I feel it's ok.

Please let me know if I should worry.

Having negative results after three months (two days don't change anything) of exposure in most cases (90%) means that you are free of HIV infection.
The overall sensitivity and specificity of the OraQuick Rapid HIV-1 Antibody Test is 99.6% and 100.0%, respectively.
The limitations of this test are similar to the limitations of other HIV antibody tests, including Delayed Detection of Exposure -- this test will not detect HIV-1 infection in people who were exposed within about three months prior to taking the test and this or other test will need to be repeated after three months of last testing.

Do you have some suspicious symptoms?
