Q: Losing Weight?

I'm so frustrated.

I wanted to post this in weight loss but they're all like "I only eat 1000 calories and work out six hours a day" - totally unhealthy.

I had a health/fitness class last semester where I learned that my appropriate caloric intake to lose weight would be around 1600 calories (given my age, weight, and activity level) , which I usually eat about that much. Also, according to calorie counting websites, I almost ALWAYS eat less calories than I burn.

So why don't I lose weight? I gained 20 pounds on an IUD about a year ago, and lost some of it, but I'm still working on getting back to my regular weight. And I CAN'T!!!

I'm on another progesterone birth control and I have a suspicion that it has something to do with it, but I don't really have another option.

I'm frustrated and I just don't get it. I am SO careful about what I eat, and I have been for quite some time. And I an fairly active too, I dance and I work out about three times per week (which is really the max I can do because I work and am in school too)

Anyone else frustrated?? Grr....

If you work out, it may be because you are building muscles. Muscle weighs more than fat. Don't focus on the number as much; focus on the look. Do you look like you have slimmed down some?

Another thing it may be is water retention. Birth control makes your body think you're pregnant, so that would make sense.

When you work out 3x a week, how intense and long is your work rate? Do you monitor your heart rate? You don't start to burn fat until your heart rate reaches a certain amount, so maybe it isn't getting high enough.

Also, are you stressed out? Stress can play a HUGE factor in weight gain/retention. If thats the case, maybe try keeping a journal, talking to people, or creating some down time for yourself. Try taking a class at your gym like yoga if they offer it. It will calm down your mind and work out your body at the same time

Girls the only valid way I know to lose a lot is to work out a lot, best way is to jog or walk long distances, 2-4 miles a day, no I'm not joking, once your body reaches it's regular weight it protects itself from going any lower so after that point you have to work 3 times (maybe more) harder to lose some.

I can easily walk/jog 3-4 miles and I still have some extra pounds.

I had problems with gaining weight on the pill. I started on Sesonale, nice not to have a period, then Ortho-tri cyclen, and eventually Yaz. Unfortunately none of them worked for me, so I had to quit them all together. Along with weight gain I had horrible mood swings, spotting, and headaches. I'm finally begining to loose the weight by working out 5 days a week and cutting calories. Its so frustrating!

In my health/fitness class I learned about how to monitor my target heart rate and stuff, so I think my work outs are pretty effective.

I really think it has to do with my birth control, but I really don't have any other options. For health reasons I have to be on progesterone only types, and I think that's the kind that make me gain weight. I'm considering non hormonal, but I already tried an IUD and will NOT try that again... I just don't trust barrier methods...

grr....

Oh, and penguin-

I'm sure it's not muscle, I have only gone up in size. Sad Stress, though, that could be it.
Thanks Wink

Hormones and stress are big contributors to messing up weight loss. They make you hang on to the weight no matter what you do. For my surgery last summer, I was on progestorone and estrogen (alternating) and I've only just started losing weight this past month and I've been eating healthy and exercising the whole time. Everyone's different, but I'm sure that those are contributing to not losing weight, then you stress more about not being able to lose, and that causes even more of a problem....talk about a sucky cycle to be in. Good luck to everyone.

Too bad you put this on the women's chat forum. Some men who happen to be personal trainers or also took nutrition classes might have been able to assist you. Oh well.

Feel free to delete that vile male's response.
