Q: Spotting While On Pill

I posted this in the wrong section, so I've posted it in the more appropriate section! I'm new to this place.

I have been using the birth control pill for about 5 months. It was coming to the end of my pack, but I didn't want to have my period. My friends have started a new pack as soon as they were done their last one to prevent getting their period. I thought i'd try this. However, I am about a week into my new pack and I have random spotting.

I remember one time while on my pills (when i new to taking them) I had been late taking some and as a result, I got spotting. During this pack, I remember being about 3 or 4 hours late on my pill, but only one pill. My friend tells me to stop taking the pills and just get my period. However, I had unprotected sex with my boyfriend a couple days ago and I am scared that if I go off the pill, even though he always pulls out before he releases, that I may somehow end up pregnant.

I really have no idea what to do and I'm scared because this has never happened to me before. If anyone, anyone at all has experienced the same or knows what I should do, please, let me know. Thank you

Do not be scared...

Nothing is WRONG at all.

Not everyone can or even will be able to skip a period at all, much less on the very first try!!

You WILL likely bleed for up to 2 weeks while your body is trying to figure out what is going on hormonally.

You will need to try skipping for 2-3 months before it will likely be successful, and in the meantime you will have a LOT OF BLEEDING.

The bleeding is not dangerous!

Skipping is more successful on MONO PHASIC PILLS, not tri phasic pills.

ah thank you very much!

so, would you say it is safe for me to go off of the pill right now, since i have spotting and just let myself get my period? i'd rather have my period for a week a month than try this frustrating thing. on another note, is it safe for me to go off the pill if i've had unprotected sex about 3 days ago?

I've tried skipping the sugar pills and going right to a new pack last year when my BF and I were going on vacation. I didn't get a full on period, but had serious spotting. It kinda screwed my period up for a while. I just kept taking my pills and eventually it all straightened out. I wouldn't be worried about getting pregnant but after I saw how messing with my BC screwed me all up, I don't recommend it! Good luck!

Don't go off your pills until the end of the pack, even if you're spotting. You will really throw off your cycle. The only exception is if you miss pills more than two days in a row. If you missed a pill for a whole day, you are supposed to double-up (or take it as soon as you remember). If you miss two pills, you have to stop and then start a new pack. Read the package directions as to what to do with your specific pills in case some of these things happen. But just missing it by 3 or 4 hours, that's not an issue. Just take it when you remember and do better next time.

If you are nervous about getting pregnant, you can always have your boyfriend wear a condom, especially if there is *any* chance at all of an STD transmission. Pulling out doesn't really do very much, especially if you aren't on the pill because pre-cum can have sperm in it. However, if there is no risk of STDs (AT ALL--be sure, this is your life we are talking about), you should be fine as long as you take the pill at the same time every day. A lot of my friends set their cell phone alarm to remind them. It makes it easier.

Personally, I skip 3 months at a time, just because I really don't like getting my period. I had spotting at first, but it went away after the third time I skipped.

If you have any more questions, re-post and we'll do our best to answer your questions.
