Q: Plan B ripped condom

Hello

my girlfriend was visiting for the weekend, and the first night she was there we had sex but I did not ejaculate, and threw the condom out. a day later, we went into the trash to check the condoms, all were fine, except for the one we used the first night - which had a small tear in it (maybe a cm long, at most). It was a spermicidal condom, and we're not sure when/where it ripped, as it had been sitting in the bottom of the trash for 2 days (and when i pulled it out, it was stuck to a pepsi can down there - gross, I know, but it could have ripped then/been cut by the can). Also, I did not ejaculate at all, and had urinated multiple times since the previous time I had ejaculated - so theoretically there should have been no sperm in the pre-cum. Just to be safe, we went and bought Plan B. From all of this, it sounds to me like the chance of her getting pregnant is very low - am I correct? I guess I'm just looking for reassurance here, b/c I've been worrying a lot even though I keep telling myself that all this means it should be ok....

Thank you very much, and happy new year!

plan b isn't as effective as its made out to be.. but the fact that you used a spermicidal condom and didn't ejaculate makes me think you're more than ok

Yes, I agree with what everyone has said.

The only reason Plan B doesn't work well all of the time is because it works by delaying ovulation. If a person has already ovulated, there is nothing Plan B can do.

Effectiveness of Plan B

Labeling for Plan B and other emergency contraceptive pills (also known as "morning after pills" or "day after pills") that contain only the hormone progestin states that the treatment reduces your risk of pregnancy by 89%*. This doesn’t mean that 11 percent of women will get pregnant using these pills. It just means that this type of emergency contraception prevents 89% of the pregnancies researchers would expect to happen when women don’t use birth control, their regular contraceptive fails, or they are forced to have sex (in other words, they have “unprotected sex”). Usually, if 100 women have unprotected sex one time during the second or third week of their monthly menstrual cycle, 8 of them will get pregnant. But if those same 100 women use Plan B, only one will get pregnant. Put another way, this is an 89% reduction in the expected number of pregnancies. And if you take these progestin-only emergency contraceptive pills within the first 24 hours after sex, they reduce your risk of pregnancy by up to 95%.
