For how long this is going on?
Is this everyday (every night) scenario
when you get attacked by your thoughts?

Early morning wakefulness with dark and
worrying thoughts is something that has
troubled me for many years. Sometimes I
will sit bolt upright as a truly
'terrifying' thought hits me - in the cold
light of day it once more becomes just
another item on my 'to do' list, and not
terrifying at all.
You sound as though you may be suffering
from anxiety, which can impact on every
area of your lie if you allow it to.
Have a pad and pen beside your bed and
write down each thought as it comes to you
- then go back to sleep. Another strategy
is, about one hour before you go to bed,
tp write down a 'to do' list for the next
day then put it aside and think no more
about it
Some people advise that if you cannot get
back to sleep, you shouldn't just lie
there - get up, have a warm drink, read a
lightweight magazine and go back to bed
when you feel tired. Others say that this
is in a sense rewarding yourself for
waking up and that you will start to do it
as a habit. I know how desperately lonely
you can feel when you are lying awake at 5
am so I would advocate the warm drink and
reading, but it may not work for you.
Don't worry about losing sleep - you can
exist on 5 hours for a while without too
much impact on your health.
Finally, I would speak to your doctor if
you feel that your anxiety level is rising
too high for these simple strategies to
work.

i get that there is something at work is
bothering you. It's time to confront it
face to face. Like Shonster suggested,
make a list of thoughts that come up for
you when you cannot sleep. Look at all
the items that you have listed down and
confront it like a man and ask:
1) What/who am i avoiding?
2) what/who am i resisting?
3) what are my concerns, fear, worries on
the items on the list
After listing them down, ask yourself
whether your fear, concern and worries are
real or true. If not, then let them go,
laugh at it and go to sleep.
If it is, can you accept it as THE WAY IT
IS now, own it and take responsible for
it.
Ask yourself what actions can you take to
alter the situation? Are you willing to do
what it take to alter the situation? When
you are willing to take responsibility,
you are able to see openings for actions.
Good Luck.

I've heard other friends who have this
problem, but it sounds like your job isn't
overly stressful? Or is it? Are you
nervous at work a lot?

I know what's like to have those awful
nights. I have some 'techniques' to make
myself calm and relaxed not only before
going to sleep, but also dureing the day.
I have a nice eating during the say (I
have some other health issues, so I must
be careful about what I eat because of
them as well); I listen to peaceful,
ambient music (I can give you some
references if you want to); I practice
breathing meditation; I do some light
exercise; I walk; I drink tea and
infusions; etc.
