Q: Painful Intercourse After Uti

so a few weeks ago (early december) I got a UTI. I was given 10 days worth of antibiotics but the next day I ended up getting really sick from one of the medications the hospital gave me. the doctor thought it was the antibiotics, so he gave me a different kind, but this time only 3 days worth. well i finished those up and all my symptoms seemed to go away, except ever since then I've been experiencing painful intercourse, like a burning that keeps getting worse and I'm forced to stop after a couple minutes. The pain continues for a little while after intercourse. My question is could this be related to the UTI and is it possible that the infection didn't completely clear up because I didn't get a full 10 days of antibiotics? Or is it something else? I haven't had any other symptoms since I was treated. And why would the doctor only have given me 3 days worth? It's been a few weeks now and I'm starting to get concerned that I could still have the infection. Do UTI's always produce obvious and noticeable symptoms?

Hi

It could be a yeast infection due to the antibiotics causing burning during intercourse.
Do you have pain or burning when urinating? If you still have a UTI you will need another antibiotic to prevent it from becoming a kidney infection.
Are you experiencing any back pain or pressure?

Take Care..hope you feel better soon..Smile

Thanks! I had no idea that antibiotics could cause yeast infections... although I haven't had any other strange symptoms. maybe a little bit of itching but nothing that really concerned me. I don't have any pain when urinating, except for right after intercourse. but yes, I have been getting a lot of lower back pain recently, but I related it to work.... Could it be something else?

How long did you wait before seeing the doctor when having the symptoms? Its never a bad idea to have your kidneys looked at just to make sure there is no damage/obstruction/inflammation etc.
I would lean towards a yeast infection as well. Very common with antibiotics.
You should go back to the doctor to make sure it is infact a yeast infection. They will tell you what to use to get rid of it. If you get any in the future you should be able to recognize the symptoms and you can get over the counter treatments

you mean the UTI symptoms? I waited a few days cause it started off gradually and i wasn't sure if it was or not. i'd say my symptoms started on a thursday night and i went to the hospital early sunday morning. i did mention to the doctor about kidney disease because i was having a lot of pain in the area of the kidneys at the time, and because kidney disease runs in my family. plus i've been told before that i had protein in my urine. but he said he checked for that and that my kidneys looked fine.

so um.. if i went to the doctor what exactly would they have to do to check for a yeast infection? i'm not really too fond of doctors.... scared

The doctor would take a look (for redness, swelling, discharge etc.) and may also take a swab (kind of like a papsmear). That's what they did for me when i was having symptoms. They may not even take a swab sometimes the doctor can tell just by looking or talking with you.

I agree with x0x011 it's best to see a doctor but it does sound like a yeast infection.

run4life10 what type of kidney disease runs in your family if you don't mind me asking? I have kidney disease and I am in stage 3/4 kidney failure, I've also had 3 kidney operations for scarring in my ureter tubes due to the type of kidney disease I have it causes scarring in the kidneys, ureters, bladder and urethra.
I can write a book on everything I've been through (and there's a lot)!!
Right now I've been passing kidney stones and vomiting, when I am feeling better I'll write about my experience in the kidney forum.

Take Care

i'm not sure what kind it is... it starts with a C i think. my mom has it, and has had numerous transplants. unfortunately they won't put her back on the transplant list due to her lifestyle... she's in the final stages.

that doesn't sound too pleasant... Sad I hope you feel better

I'm just curious... don't yeast infections usually have obvious symptoms? like constant burning or itching? because I haven't been itching, and it only hurts during intercourse...

I haven't had many yeast infections and it's been a long time since I have, I don't recall anything other than burning and itching.
You might want to post in the women's forums.

Sorry to hear about your mom, I hope she doesn't get any worse.

I have another question... if it is a yeast infection, i know they say you should refrain from sex until you're done treatment, but what about doing other sexual things with no chance of passing the infection on to your partner? Would that impede recovery?

As long as your not passing fluids you should be fine. But Im not sure I would be certain its a yeast infection sounds more like kidneys or bladder infection to me. If you still continue to have any symptoms or concerns I would return to the doctors, I know how you feel I hate to go as well but you really dont want to neglect your kidneys it could turn serious especially with your family history. good luck

why do you say kidneys or bladder? i've had UTI's before, and I always get painful urination and constant pain/burning. but i've only been having painful intercourse and no other symptoms. and if the infection moves to your kidneys i heard you're supposed to get a fever and stuff.... besides, i was just treated for a UTI. do you think it didn't go away and that the infection might have spread?

some other symptoms of a kidney infection are
burning or pain with urination
unable to empty your bladder
puss and/or blood in your urine
cloudy urine or strong smelling urine

fever, chills, back pain, pan or pressure in your abdomen.
The symptoms vary on the degree of the infection. If in fact you have a kidney infection and it goes untreated it can become severe leading to kidney damage (decreased function) or kidney loss.

In my opinion you should contact your primary doctor or whichever doctor gave you the antibiotics for the UTI and let him/her know you are having pain with intercourse. You may have a completely separate health issue going on in this case you would be need to see a GYN.
They may do an ultrasound to check your urinary system including kidneys and at the same time they can check your ovaries and uterus.
I always say it's better to be safe than sorry.

I wish I had an easy answer for you.
Keep us posted. Smile
