Zyban effectiveness
Posted: 01-03-08 06:10am

my fiance has been smoking for the past 5 yrs. The Dr advised him to buy ''ZYBAN'' to quit smoking. He started taking the tablets on 1st of Jan. it has been like 3 days. He still has the urge to smoke but because of my warning, observation and me being beside him, he smokes half a bud on the morning & half before he goes to bed. But he said he still has the urge to smoke more & he's just controlling.

When will this medicine take effect? is it normal for him to have the urge to smoke?? roughly by when will he stop having the urge to smoke? Till when he has to continue taking this medicine...a month? 2 or 3?

It says on the ZYBAN website: "At first, you keep smoking while taking ZYBAN. Then you set a Give It Up Date in your second week of taking the ZYBAN tablets (around Days 8-14) when you stop smoking, but continue taking ZYBAN for the remainder of the course. A typical course of ZYBAN takes approximately 7 weeks (3 to 4 packs of ZYBAN). It takes about 1 week for ZYBAN to reach the right levels in the body to be fully effective. So, to maximise your chance of quitting, you should not stop smoking until you have been taking ZYBAN for 1 week. You should set a date to stop smoking during the second week you're taking ZYBAN (e.g. from Day eight).Take your medicine as your doctor has told you. The usual recommended dose is one 150mg tablet each day for the first 3 days. On the fourth day, begin taking one 150mg tablet twice daily. Doses should be taken at least 8 hours apart.

Most people should take ZYBAN for at least 7 weeks ie. 3 packs of ZYBAN. Follow your doctor's instructions.

The label on your medicine will usually tell you how much to take and how often. If you are not sure, ask your doctor or pharmacist. ". It also says on the website that there may be a few minor side effects such as headaches, a dry mouth and difficulty sleeping, but these often dissappear after the first few weeks.

In my opinion, its worth the side effects and more to give up smoking.
