Q: Cirrhosis Question

Hi,

my father im sure is dying of cirrhosis, due to excessive alcohol consumption for almost all of his life.

At this point, he is allowing it to progress and chooses not to see a doctor to see how progressed it had become.

He already has been diagnosed with a disorder related to the alcohol, that actually shrinks his brain, and loss of feeling is his limbs.

Based on his symptoms, can anyone give me any idea of how much time he has left to live? I realize its only a guesstimate, but its really all I have to go on, since he will not get a doctor's advice. I understand that this would not be medical advice.

Swollen abdomen (probably from fluid build up and/or diabetes)
swollen feet
no appetite
dry skin
sores on his legs from scratching at night
vomiting
diarhea
blood in urine

any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.
D.

Cirrhosis
Hi - i'm sorry about your dad. My uncle died from the disease and a good friend also. They both had those symptoms, and were young when they died. 48 and 50. They were both pretty sick for a long time. My father-in-law also died due to cirrhosis. He had stopped drinking for about 10 years after he was hospitalized for about a month. He started drinking again, and died within a year or 2. My uncle and friend didn't see any doctors because they knew they couldn't stop drinking, so in their minds, what was the point. I'm sorry you have to watch him suffer. I lost my parents last year. My dad died, and then 11 weeks later my mom died, too. It's unbearable. Hang in there. Janice

Janice, Thanks For the Response
Thank you. Yes, my dad hopefully will make it to 60 in dec. Imfrankly surprised he has lasted this long.

Yes, he does not want to go to the hospital, because im sure he does not want to go through withdrawals either, and my guess is that he would rather not burden me.

I figured as much based on the symptoms.
Im so sorry for all of your losses. I survive everyday knowing, that when he goes, he will be in a better place, but I sure will miss him.
Good people do go to a better place. Im positive of it.

For those who develop cirrhosis, fatty liver, hepatitis C or liver cancer, they cannot taste the happiness of being healthy however rich they are. During the battle of fighting against all these diseases, patients have to fight them to the end everyday.
However, patients with cirrhosis, fatty liver, hepatitis C and liver caner don’t always have to limit their diets; in contrast, they can enjoy all kinds of delicious foods, go shopping, go traveling, and have a hot spring bath and so on. All of the above can make them fully understand the joy of life.
