Q: Amnesia and memory loss

My mother was completely fine then she went to a party and upon her return she can't seem to remember much of anything. Like its slowly slipping away from her. She can't remember all of the stuff she did a few hours before she left, or where she brought my Cuz to. I'm worried about her. She is obsessing over her phone which she seemed to have lost and I dunno what to do. Help!

Memory loss (amnesia) can be due to brain damage and can also be caused by psychological reasons. Amnesia due to brain damage is called organic amnesia. Examples of causes for brain damage include trauma (concussion, contusion…) or illness (all types of dementia, brain insult…). Amnesia due to psychological reasons is called psychic amnesia. This kind of amnesia is present during some types of hysteria – a kind of neurotic disorder. You can consult a neurologist and a psychiatrist about your mother’s condition in order to diagnose her experience of memory loss.
