Hello Ptense,
Welcome to this wonderful forum.
By all means make an appointment to see your doctor. And if your doctor is not a neurologist/spinal surgeon, then seek out the best you can find. You do need to have the advice of a spine specialist. AND you need to make an appointment with another spinal specialist. Second opiniions are very important. Don't delay.
I am not a doctor, but with that pain going down your leg to your big toe, it is possible that you may have a pinched nerve in your spine, and that needs attention. Be not concerned at this time about surgery, for it is one step at a time. For me it was receiving an epidural injection from my pain management doctor and PT. That has helped immensely for me.
I wish you the best. Stay in touch and let us know how things go for you.
