Q: How Not to Lose Your Mind Bf During a Growth Spurt?

I have a question for BTDT moms who've breastfed...how do you not lose your mind breastfeeding thru a growth spurt? Ugh. I am at my wit's end. My baby is 17 days old, and I think she has hit a growth spurt and all she wants to do nonstop is nurse. I have done nothing but nurse her all day, except 30 min. or an hour here & there. I don't think she's gassy or sick, she just wants to eat and eat and can't ever seem to get enough and is fussy when she's not being fed and screams bloody homicide, but it's wearing me out. Last night, I hardly got any sleep because of this. I assume it's a growth spurt, but when will it end? How can I keep breastfeeding through this? I'm having a hard time with it right now because I can do nothing but feed my baby. I do have a few bags of pumped breastmilk frozen, and right now, DH is feeding her from one of those so I can have a bit of a break. Please tell me this doesn't last forever!

Jay's been doing that today too o.o Try pumping more, I guess? Or use some formula. I formula feed Jay at night because she'll sleep for 3 hours after a formula feeding, instead of an hour with breast milk, and I can get some sleep Very Happy

Dante's done that too so far. But I just do it, because it's not like I have other stuff to do really. Hope she lets up a bit, or formula feed her sometimes like Katrina said. Good luck.

it may be that she doesn't want to eat. you don't need formula. you may have too fast a flow for her and she may be sucking for comfort but getting too much. sometimes when they are feeling gassy or some other discomfort, they will try to suck for comfort. you could try a binky or better yet try pumping a little out before you feed her so your breasts aren't too full. if you go to formula now you won't be able to make enough breastmilk for her because the demand won't be there. the last thing you should do if you think she isn't getting enough to eat is give her formula. the more she sucks on your breasts, the more milk they will make.
if you are getting a little too engorged sometimes they can get too much of the foremilk which is watery and has too much lactic acid in it that can make them gassy and fussy. if you pump some of that milk out and give her the hindmilk, it is rich in milk fat and doesn't upset her tummy. it is also more filling and very good for her. make sure you feed her on the same breast until it is empty to make sure she gets all the hindmilk.

believe me, i worried about it too, but you CAN do it. you DO have enough milk for her. she won't starve if you don't give her formula. all that will do is wean her and make you lose your milk supply that she is working so hard to build up right now. it's not easy but you are doing the best for her and she won't be a little newborn forever. just remember that it seems like forever now, but hang in there !!!! you're doing great.
