I just turned 20. My mother has PCOS, and
in March 2006 I had severe abdominal
pains, and discovered an ovarian cyst the
size of a tennis ball. I was just 18 at
the time. Passed from doctor to doctor, a
exploratory laparoscopy was scheduled
immediately, and then the specialist
decided two days later that it was "not
necessary" that there was "probably
nothing to worry about". I was told when
the cyst was first discovered that it
would shrink, burst or otherwise fade away
into nothingness and not matter at all.
All it has done is increase in size. So,
here I am with my OCP prescription and an
occassional ultrasound to monitor my
constant companion - my cyst. The pains
come and go, and things have been good for
a while, and last week I had a normal
period, and 4 days after it finished, I
had breakthrough bleeding (which I have
never had). That bleeding has developed
into another fullblown period - literally.
The bleeding is very heavy and full of
clots, and I'm quite scared. Has anyone
experienced this before? Is this a common
complaint? I was anaemic to begin with,
and I'm concerned about my current rate of
blood loss. Am I validated in this
concern, or am I simply overreacting?

i haven't had to deal with this. i have
pcos, and i have had to deal with ovarian
cysts, but none that large! i would go to
an urgent care clinic or an emergency room
tomorrow! it will probably take a while,
but maybe they will be able to get you in
to get an ultrasound to check and make
sure things are okay internally. i hope
everything goes well and you are doing
better soon. keep us posted!

I had an even larger cyst removed from my
ovary a year ago. When was your last
doctor appointment and/or ultrasound?

Go to have a second opinion, then a
third-you are very young- I had uterine
polyps that several doctors overlooked
over several years, and finally I found a
good gyn who decided to give me a
different type of test that found the
polyps-I had alot of pain where I couldn't
sit down or walk, I would have really
heavy bleeding with major clotting that I
felt part of my body was falling out. I
also was not pregnant since I was a virgin
at the time. I had a d&c and now he
watches for it and I had it again and now
he wants me to go on birth control as a
precaution since I too was young to have
two d&c's for uterine polyps- my point
is - not all doctors know all the answers,
ask as many questions and don't just yes
them and walk away. It is your body and
if you neglect it now - you may be putting
your body at risk.
