Membrane Sweep? Posted: 12-29-07 14:04pm
Hi there! I am 39 weeks pregnant and was
at my doctors yesterday. She offered to
do a membrane sweep if I wanted one but I
declined because I dont know anything
about the procedure! I've read very
little on it, not much is covered in the
baby books that I own. Can someone out
there tell me what happens? If I havent
had the baby by my next appointment Im
thinking I will go ahead and do it.
Thanks to all who reply!
basically i think they just stick your
fingers into your cervix and basically try
and sweep your membranes from the wall to
help bring you into labor, it doesnt
always work though, i know my sister had
it done nd went into labor the same day
but other people have it done and it
really doesnt do anything but cause some
cramps andminor bleeding.

Hi I'm 40 weeks and they offered to sweep
my membranes last week at my appointment
because I told them I couldnt wait until
my daughter is born. My Dr. said that
running her fingers along my cervix and
stretching the area out a bit would help
throw me into labor by causing
contractions to happen. I declined because
as much as I want her out I felt she
should come on her own unless there
develops any type of complications to
where it would be more necessary. Also I
feared it would be painful. My Dr. assured
me that it wouldnt hurt but that it would
be very uncomfortable and that I would
feel a lot of pressure. My mom had her
membranes sweeped with both pregnancies,
my brother and I and the day she got it
down, my brother and I were born within
that following night. If my baby dosnt
come out on her own by this weds they said
I can have my membranes sweep or else they
will schedule me for an induction. I've
heard from the ladies here @ ehealth that
an induction is more painful so I'm going
for the sweep if it becomes necessary.
Sorry so long, I hope all goes well for
your labor and delivery, looks like anyday
for us now yay!!! Congrats!!
Oh yeah, also heard
that its normal to bleed after a membrane
sweep, just thought I'd tell you cuz that
would have freaked me out if someone
diddnt tell me that lol. Goodluck hun.
