Q: Why Is There So Much Blood During An Abortion?

This is probably a really silly question but I've wondered for a while now where on earth all the blood comes from, particularly during a medical abortion?

The embryo/foetus won't be very big so that won't have much blood and the placenta would be small too. I suppose the uterine lining comes away too but that shouldn't be more than a period's amount, surely? Where's the rest come from??? Confused

It is not THAT much more than a period..

It's just that it ALL comes at ONCE, in a few hour time frame, so it seems very very heavy!

Then there will be light spotting/bleeding for a few weeks after.
