Starting a New Pack of Yaz Late
Posted: 12-28-07 12:19pm

I have been on Yaz for a few months now and recently completed my 5th pill pack. I wasn't able to purchase my next pill pack until 2 weeks later and started that sunday as usual. I took the pill for 7 days again before having sex. I figured this would be okay, but am now a little concerned because i had premenstrual syndromes last week and was even bleeding a little bit. I'm still in the middle of that last pack I started! Was I protected? or should I be worried about how off my schedule is now?

YES you were protected.

Bleeding is normal anytime you miss pills, or start a new pack later than usual.

When I was on Yaz or any BCP for that matter the dr told me that if I missed just to wait until the sunday after my period started to start the pills again (I am notorious for missing pills) She said otherwise it won't work. To be safe you should take a test because you are supposedly supposed to start the pills after the period not just on any sunday so try the test and go from there

Actually you were perfectly fine because you waited 7 days. The PMS symptoms etc are just due to being off the pills longer than usual. It's very unlikely you're pregnant. Pills do not have to be taken right after your period to work. You can start any day of the week at any time of the month. The ONLY advantage to starting the first day of your period is because then you're safe immediately.

As for starting the sunday after your period: You're NOT safe immediately unless that also happens to be within 3 days of your period starting. If that sunday is farther than that, then you are NOT safe and need to take the pills for a whole week. So just because you start the pills on the first sunday after your period doesn't instantly make them work. You got some rather bad advice from your gyno, Womaninpain.

I didn't say that they worked instantly Eiri, I was told that they were not effective and that you can get pregnant if you take them before your period so that you should wait until the sunday after you start your period to start taking them

WOMANINPAIN-

I work with Birth control, I am a womans health professional.

What has been explained to you has not been explained properly.

You cannot GET pregnant if you take pills BEFORE your period starts... The problem is that you might ALREADY BE PREGNANT, but start the pills before you would even know.

I tell women to go ahead and start pills before their period, as long as they used protection and we can reasonably assume pregnancy is not a possibility.

I work in a clinic that provides abortion services as well, so I have a lot of experience dealing with unwanted pregnancy and birth control issues.

well that is interesting...I will have to tell my doctor this and ask more questions, I guess regardless it is a good idea to start them the sunday after your period.

It's best to start them within three days of the start of your period no matter what day of the week it is. That way you're safe immediately. If you just start any sunday after your period, you may still have to wait a week.
