Q: Omg! the Pain

My back is usually never good and always in some kind of pain or achey mode. But, all of a sudden this afternoon on a scale from 1-10, I was at least a 5. I took two 5mg oxycodone which I never do and just now, 5 hours later took two more. Figures over Christmas Holiday eh? I'm going to sleep on the couch tonight only becuse it is softer and has a better contour for my back. The nurse practitioner suggested on of those soft contoured neck pillows and just sleep with that just around my waist. I just may take her up on that. The worst thing is I did'nt do anything out of the ordinary today for this to happen. It was just so sudden and happened even as I wore my TENS unit. I really don't want a laminectomy at my age, I really don't. I'm getting depressed just thinking about it. If this is going to happen when I have'nt even strained myself doing anything, then what!
I do'nt want to be in bed for Christmas, I really do not.

Helloo Carrie,

Sorry to read about your "unexpected" severe pain. I certainly hope it will be better by tomorrow morning.

I've been there. No reason that all of a sudden the pain level goes up. Perhaps the weather, but I've plotted the barometric pressure ups and downs, and honestly I've not seen a correlation to the pain. At those times I must admit I start to weaken regarding the surgery bit. Thank goodness and a day or two I'm much better and surgery is far from my mind.

I pray that your pain will have subsided by tomorrow morning and that you can truly enjoy celebrating the birth of Christ.

Take care.

Merry Christmas Carrie,

Thank you for your very kind words. Your faith will see you through.

"May all your joys in life by on the path you take." I like that Carrie. That is a very thought provoking statement. I found I had to read it several times for the depth of the meaning to sink in. Thanks!!!!

Well Carrie, if I don't "stay that way", do let me know about it.

A Christmas bear hug to you!!

Hey Suzy, I wish it were that easy for me too. Doc alreadly told me not to waste my money on creams and stuff, When you have on or more buldging herniated disc's pain mangement with paij pills and ice on and off is the only thing that will help. I am still in alot of pain. Right around a 6 or so. I don't want to complain to much or he will send me to s neuro consult for disc fusion surgery. And ain't now way that's gonna happen, Now if the pain starts moving up the chart toward a 8-10, then I may think about it. I go next weel to get my hypo-allergenic electrode pads at a whooping cost of $28.00 for four of them. I am so allergic to that sticky goop on the back of the cheaper ones. Go figure,

Merry Christmas and enjoy you first with you new daugher.

Up-date
The new electodes are working well. Neuro has put me on 20mg of oxycotin twice a day with up to three oxycodone for breakthrough pain. I am going for another L-Spine X-Ray on Monday hoping that my fall did not aggrivate it. Today is my first day on 20mg dose. He started me on only 10mg twice a day for 7 days and the up to 20mg twice a day starting tomorrow. But, I had to call him yesterday because it was still only taking the edge off. He is allowing me to start the 20mg a day early due to that. Plus the pain has started to radiate to my left kidney and I am going this morning to have my urine checked out to make sure nothing is going on. But, he did say (when he called me back) that is was possible for pain that bad to raditate to other areas ( which I did already know). I also asked him about any future surgery and he said no. Not with my kind of disc problem. I also asked him if I would have this for the rest of my life and he said yes but, with Physical Theorpy it might help also manage my pain. When it starts getting out of his hands, he will then send me to pain managment. I guess I better stock up on batteries and electodes as the TENS UNIT really does help alot. Let's see what the increase in pain medication does for me. I do'nt like to feel like I am in la la land. But, if it means a decrease in this pain, I guess I will just have to be a zombie.

Carrie, have you given any thought to acupuncture or seeing an osteopath?

Ahhhh yes! I am now doing just that. Matter of fact I use to work in a strickly D.O hopital. And did you know they have to go through a few more years of traing than an M.D. does. I have high respect for the Osteopahic pratice. lonestarguy (I believe it was on my other back thread ) suggested accupunture and I will also look into that. Getting some great alternatives here. Makes me happy. Smile

Yay! I used to work for a phenomenal D.O. and I was "Cured" of chronic pain with acupuncture. I'm pretty sure I would have kilt meself by now had it not been for that!
