Q: Heavy Breakthrough Bleeding On Nuvaring

Hey guys.

I just wondered if anyone else has experienced this. Ok, so I'm on Nuvaring for about 4 months, standard 21 days in, 7 out. I had light spotting the first month. Everything fine. My period's come within a few days of taking out the ring, though they're noticeably lighter. Then, I switched a month ago to 28 days in, 7 days out, to save money, and 21 days into it, I have a huge period!

It's not the heaviest I've had my entire life; actually I struggled with anemia and heavy menstrual flow my entire adolescence. But, compared to the other periods....and this is first time I've bled like this WITH the ring in.

I'm still sticking to my scheldule, regardless of this. But it's been 5 days already. I hope I won't have ANOTHER period when I remove the ring. Any consolation would be helpful.

no one's experienced this, eh? I'm really kind of freaking out. I don't feel very good.

If you do not feel good then you need to go to a doctor immediately. It sounds like you shouldn't have switched up how you used the ring.

If you are filling more than three pads or tampons in an hour you need to go to a doctor. Due to your past conditions I'd go right now.

I think I'm ok now. I'm in my "out" week, and now it's only spotting. I'm glad it stopped! I think it's just some wierd fluke. If it happens next month, or anything else happens, I'll go to the doctor.

Feeling a lot better now, sorry to get you all worried. My cycle must have just been regulating itself.

Thank you. I only said I didn't "feel good" because the bleeding was freaking me out! It wasn't nearly as bad as the period probs I had when I was a young teenager. Still, if it happens again, I'll go to my doc. Sorry to be so dramatic. This is my first time on birth control, and I'm still getting used to the idea! (you can have sex and not get pregnant???Wink Wow!) I know it's silly, but my husband and I have used only condoms every time for 8 years before this!

hey..ok so i have to tell you...im on the ring too and ive done alot of research on it. i dont know if youre aware or not, but the ring is only designed to release the hormones that prevent pregnancy for three weeks..not four! in that fourth week it is virtually ineffective. i know theyre pretty costly, but if you dont want any unexpected suprises, id advise you to stick to the three weeks. sorry to burst ur bubble Sad

CUPCAKE

THAT IS NOT CORRECT.

IT IS WIDELY known among health professionals, ME INCLUDED, that the nuva ring releases hormones for 35 DAYS!!

Many women use nuva ring 4 weeks in and one week out!

The answer to your question is in an article by Mulders; Fertility and Sterility in 2001 (volume 75, page 865). This is the article that demonstrates that NuvaRing prevents ovulation for 35 days.

Breakthrough Bleeding
I'm experiencing something like this right now! i've been on the nuvaring for 3 cycles now. No side effects, except for some mood swings the first month. I took the ring out 2 Sundays ago, had my period, put it back in this past Sunday- completely normal. Only today, 4 days later, its like my period's starting up again! Super heavy bleeding- much worse than my normal period. I'm very disappointed. I hope it stops soon.

And I hope this doesn't happen next month- I'm getting married in 28 days. I'm scheduled to have my period the week before, but it would suck so bad if I suddenly have break through bleeding on my wedding day. I really don't want to have to wear a pad with my wedding dress, but I also don't want it to get ruined...

And as for the honeymoon- we are both LDS, and virgins. That would be super disappointing.
