high cholesterol and weight loss Posted: 12-20-07 05:30am
Hi
I am a 51 year old male who had a heart
attack 5 years ago when i was told i also
had suffered 2 previous ones. Up until
that point i was above average fitness for
my age. All of my adult life i had weighed
12st 4lb or thereabouts. (my height is 6ft
1") I have always eaten healthily and
never had a sweet tooth or craved junk
food. Ok i probably had fish and chips
once in a while (maybe 3 or 4 times a
year).
So back to 2002 when it all began, it hit
me bad and i was housebound for 18 months
and i gained 5 stone in weight and
rocketed to 17st 6lbs. During this time i
had not changed my eating habits but my
mobility had obviously come to a halt. I
developed a severe bad back which made
matters worse. I was fitted with 2
arterial stents in 2002 because of the
severe angina i was getting.I had a bad
experience during this procedure as 1 of
the balloons would not deflate and i was
on the table hours! I was told I had
further arteries that would probably
require future attention and sure enough
this happened as on discharge my angina
was still severe and 1 year later i had a
further 3 stents fitted. Touch wood my
angina has been fine since although my
mobility is still limited and walking is
extremely difficult, my back has shown no
improvement.
Over the past 5 years i have really
changed my lifestyle and i try every
single day to push myself doing as much
excercise as i am physically able, i no
longer drink alchohol, i was drinking
quite a lot and my diet is as healthy as i
can get it.
This is my dilemma
Since 2004 I have been tring to lose
weight almost to the point of paranoia,
counted all the calories read all the
labels and i was constantly gaining
weight! My stomach is distended and
nothing was having any effect. I felt
constantly tired but still made all the
efforts. Then 1 year ago i was diagnosed
with diabetes and was advised to control
by diet! How could i change my diet when i
already was doing all the right things? I
carried on until about 6 weeks ago when i
was at the doctors for some blood results
i had for the yearly diabetes test, when i
was told by the doctor " I am worried
about your results" she said. Your blood
sugars are too high averaging out at 9.2
but more worryingly your cholesterol
results are off the scale, 7.2, which is
high but being controlled by the 80mg
(max) statin that i take. It is the
triglyceride levels 21.9 (safe level 2.0)
that " I am worried about".
This was the first time anyone mentioned
anything about my cholesterol!!
I was flabbergasted, i asked how can this
be? Why have i got all these things i have
always eaten healthily etc, to be told it
is all genetic. I can find no trace of any
of these illnesses in my family. I am
being refered to a lipid specialist.
So 6 weeks ago i tweaked my diet even
further so all i now eat is
Morning - Bowl of porridge made with half
water and half soya milk
Lunch - Bowl of home made vegetable soup
with one slice of seeded granary bread
Evening Meal - small plate of - either
fish and basmati rice, grilled chicken and
basmati rice - or grilled salmon and
basmati rice.
Snacks in the evening - 6 or 7 Baby Plum
tomatoes or 3 or 4 dry water biscuits.
In the last 6 weeks I have also increased
my walking to as much as i can
Results
I have not lost even 1 ounce, my weight is
identical, i am utterly frustrated and am
at my wits end. I am making all the
efforts and nothing is working!!!
Tablets i take
Morning
Aspirin
Beta Blocker

Ramipril
Lanzoprosol
Tramadal
Cocodemol
Metformin

Are you experiencing hair loss?
Do you have coarse, dry hair and dry,
rough pale skin?
Have you noticed a memory loss and
difficult to concentrate?
Do you find hard to fall or stay asleep?
Do you feel like you can't sustain cold?

Do you know what type of diabetes you have
(type 1 or type 2)?
