Systemic lupus erithematosus (SLE) is an autoimmune disorder wherein the immune system creates antibodies against its own body’s structures. Wrong immune response causes inflammation and can damage almost all the organs and tissues in the body.
The precise cause of SLE (as well as all other autoimmune diseases) is still unknown but there are certain data that suggest a certain genetic background of all autoimmune disorders. But presence of bad genes is not enough to develop SLE. It is also believed that some environmental factors (infections, ultra-violet irradiation, some drugs) can provoke or contribute to the development of SLE.
The genes responsible for SLE can be inherited from the parents or created (via mutation) during the spermatozoid production (spermatogenesis), egg-cell production (ovogenesis) and early stages of embryonic development. Nonetheless, you can get pregnant even if you are suffering from SLE.
