Q: Nuvaring bleeding & spotting
asked by: DoctorQuestion on December 18th, 2007
My question is that my doctor approved me to use the Nuvaring for 28 days (4weeks)in, 7 days out, for period management. This would also save me money, which is important in my case. However, this month, the second month of this regimen, I am experiencing bleeding 21 days into the cycle. Should I continue my regimen and keep the Nuvaring in for another 7 days, then remove it, or remove it now? I think it is very important to stick to a scheledule so the body can get used to it, but am slightly worried at the moderate bleeding. I am also wondering if I will have a period on my ring-free week, as well. I have been very accurate in charting the exact time of removal and placement. Thank you for your time and consideration in responding to my post.

Theoretically, if you wear the Nuvaring for four weeks instead of three weeks you can achieve a prolonged menstrual cycle. But it's not very wise to do that for economic purposes. Any change in the previous month's normal cycle duration can cause functional spotting, which is what seems to have happened in your case. Regardless, you can consult your gynecologist to exclude some possible organic reason for the spotting (tumor, infection, polypus, myoma…).
