Q: Coughing and mucus
asked by: DoctorQuestion on December 18th, 2007
During the day I'm fine, it's the night time that is killing me. I cough excessively, have abundant amounts of mucus that I need to cough up and spit out all night. This has been going on for over 7 months. Tried Nasonex and that doesn't help at all. Mucus is white in color so it's not an infection. The weird thing about the whole situation is the fact that the symptons occur only in the night time. Once it gets dark I start coughing and the mucus builds up..

Can you please help me understand my condition and possibly offer some advice. Thanks

During the day time, the body is usually in a vertical (straight) state. Therefore, any mucus produced from the lungs, throat, nasal cavity or sinuses can be easily swallowed once it reaches the throat (thanks to gravity). During the nighttime when the body is in horizontal state, the mucus moves slower and collects in the throat provoking irritation and cough.

Mucus production is usually caused by some type of upper or lower respiratory infection. You can check out your symptoms for proper diagnosis at your GP's office and can consult a ENT-specialist or pulmologist (lung specialist), if necessary.
