Q: Underweight; Do I Have An Eating Disorder?

I am a 27 year old athletic female with no children living overseas from my home country. I struggle to find food that I like and hate cooking. I have always had irregular periods but they have become very regular since I have lost the weight. People keep commenting on how skinny I look, but that may be due to the fact that I am in a country where people are very over weight (this place has the highest percentage of Type II diabetes). I think I look great and do not wish to put the weight back on. However, if there are serious health risks, I will make an effort to gain some of it back. It seems that there isn't much information online in determining if I'm underweight, just some questionnaires determining if I binge and purge, which never have, then they tell me that my BMI is too low. If you have any information for me, it would be helpful. I am sick of websites saying, "see your health care provider". The doctors here don't know what they are doing and the health care is not good, especially if you are a woman.

You can't really base anything on BMI, mine always says I'm underweight, though I think I'm healthy... BMI doesn't include muscle mass or stuff like that.

To loose that weight you could have changed something in your eating patterns, like eating more healthly foods, or been under stress?

Sometimes seeing your doctor or nurse might be helpful, depending what you really want though.

it doesnt sound like u have an eating disorder - i agree that u wud definitely know if u have it and yes pls do not base evrything on BMI. as long as u go to your yearly checkups and the doc say ure fine then u are...so dont worry abt wat people say. there r just people who r naturally thin Smile

If you were still worried, I'd go to a good fitness professional who doesn't use bmi. I'd have them check weight and body composition, that way you can see if you have adequate muscle and fat for your lifestyle and height.
