Losing Weight While Pregnant Posted: 12-16-07 02:25am
Hello all. I am approximately 8 weeks
pregnant, this is a estimation, since
I've yet to be able to see a doctor. My
question is this...I am significantly
overweight, not just 10 or 20 pounds. I
know I still need to be getting all my
nutrients, but is it possible to still
lose weight through light exercise &
eating right or should I be concerned if I
start to lose weight?

I don't think pregnancy is a good time to
worry about losing weight, unless when you
do see a doctor he/she oks it. Just eat
sensibly and get regular exercise, as you
say light exercise. You could probably
gradually increase it if you're feeling
ok, again, unless when you see a doctor
he/she advised otherwise. In the
meantime, I'm sure you could also be
taking a daily multivitamin and mineral
supplement.

Ooh, that almost sounds like I'm saying
don't worry, go ahead and lose weight. I
mean it's probably not a good time to lose
weight.
I was thinking, if you're a good bit
overweight, perhaps you should get started
with prenatal care pretty soon. Is there
a clinic you could go to if finances are
an issue? I believe there a more
complications that can occur when the
mother is quite a bit overweight, like
diabetes of pregnancy and high blood
pressure and probably others.

Yes, finances are the issue, right now.
I'm applying for health care assistance,
but it's going to take awhile to get
approved. I've looked into clinics, but
there are no indigent care plans in my
state, plus I can't find any free clinics
near by either. I guess if worse comes to
worse, I'll go to the hospital, but I
really don't want to do that.
I was trying to eat healthy when I first
determined I was pregnant, but money has
gotten so tight that I am now reduced to
eating roman noodle, which have absolutely
no nutritional value.
I haven't been losing weight yet, it's
just that I weighed myself today & I
am actually heavier now than I have ever
been. To be honest I would need to lose
about 175 pounds to be at a normal weight,
so I just thought, maybe if I started
walking a couple miles a day, which I
understand to be good for the baby, or at
least the pregnancy, I might take some
weight off as well.
Oh, & I am taking a prenatal vitamin
already. Got those before I ran out of
money.

you should not be on ANY type of diet or
exersize program AT ALL unless you
notified a doctor first and they reviwed
it with you.

I've seen a doctor?

Walking is the best exercise and it is
good for your circulation and for your
baby. Take it easy tho. If you are not
accustomed to any type of exercise, you
should only do little bits at a time at
first. Sometimes just getting up to do
normal chores is a good way to start.
Just get up and vacuum the house, mop a
floor:...maybe just take one room a day at
first. It will make you feel good and
your house will be clean
Actually you can "diet" while pregnant. I
am talking about what you eat, not a
weight loss program. For people who are
overweight or obese there is no need to
put on extra pounds. Of course you
should consult with your doctor, but
keeping your weight where it is is ok. If
you keep up your lifestyle, you could end
up with worse problems such as gestational
diabetes.
I am not saying that you should obsess
about gaining a few extra pounds if you do
gain, but it is "dieting to LOSE" weight
is not recommended: not eating enough so
that your baby doesn't get the calories
she needs. There is nothing wrong with
getting on a healthy diet/lifestyle. Only
eat when you are hungry and just take the
sugar and processed foods out of your
diet. Eat fruits and vegetables instead
of cookies and french fries and the like.
You may even lose weight from not eating
just these foods.
You will also find that taking processed
foods and sugar will decrease your
symptoms of depression. Drink lots of
water to keep your system clean. If you
happen to lose weight from eating healthy
and walking or cleaning your house, you
want to keep any toxins lost from your fat
cells burned flushed out of your system.
I hope this helps.
After your baby is born, if you are not
breastfeeding, you can take up a more
rigorous routine and a diet program.

I can't see how a LITTLE walking could
hurt, but I would definitely say that,
since you apparently haven't been doing
much or any, "a couple of miles" is way
too much to start out with. And just go
at a moderate pace, nothing that gets you
out of breath. Rome wasn't built in a
day.

If you actually are overweight, you don't
need to gain as much during your
pregnancy, 20 pounds more or so should be
expected amount in your case. Just eat the
right amount to provide nutrients for the
child and to gain that amount, it isn't
necessary to go beyond that. If you gain
too much during pregnancy, it will
actually be more difficult for you to lose
weight post pregnancy. I don't know if you
have been physically active (via exercise)
beforehand, but if you haven't been, and
you are nearing your second trimester, it
isn't recommended to start an exercise
program as some stated.
Walking is probably fine, as the rest of
these ladies stated.
