Lawmakers push through veterans, abortion bills

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

Ohio women could be asked to look at an ultrasound picture before getting an abortion, and retired veterans would no longer pay state income tax on their pensions under bills that saw action yesterday in the legislature's final session of 2007.
...
Legislative leaders cleared some leftovers off their plates before leaving for a nearly four-week holiday break.

The abortion bill drew no floor debate in the House and was passed on a bipartisan 72-18 vote.

Rep. Shannon Jones, R-Springboro, said allowing a woman to view an ultrasound before having an abortion "would allow her to make a more informed decision."

"If you set aside the value of the innocent, unborn child for the sake of this discussion, choosing elective surgery of any kind is no small decision."

The bill does not mandate that an ultrasound be performed, nor that a woman be required to look at it.***** The bill now goes to the Senate.

*****Honestly, I'm not even sure what the point of this is, but Rep. Shannon Jones is a ignoramus. Maybe by her reasoning we should show MRI scans for vasectomies, appendix removals, tonsils, bariactric surgeries, you pick it. I'd have more respect for her and other lawmakers if they were honest with their intentions.

"allowing a woman to view an ultrasound before having an abortion 'would allow her to make a more informed decision.'"

Woman: "What? There is a baby in there? Oh, ok, nevermind."

Sounds like a very ineffective way to guilt trip people.
YAY FOR OHIO! I'm getting out of here as soon as I can.

Any woman who is having an abortion knows exactly what is inside of her and what she is doing. Most probably did a lot of research before the procedure anyway. I was aware that at 5 1/2 weeks the embryo was only about 2mm long. I highly doubt that a picture of it at this stage would have had any effect on my decision at all. If a woman decides not to abort after seeing the ultrasound picture, that is fine with me. It probably means she didn't really want to do it in the first place.

But I do have a question. Would she be viewing her OWN ultrasound, or just a random one? An ultrasound at 12 weeks probably looks a bit different then one at 6 weeks. Or will it be a picture of a developed fetus? Just curious. Smile

I would imagine seeing an ultrasound of a 5 week fetus might put you off having tandoori prawns for dinner.

Hmm.... interesting.... I seem to get into a debate with proaborts quite often about whether a fetus or embryo IS a "baby"... but I'm glad you have no doubt in your mind.

Ah, well, it worked for the gag! It wasn't something I expected anyone to call me on.

Totally off topic, but where in Ohio are you from? I'm from Columbus. Very
