Q: Cats Spraying?

Apparently my older cat is in heat & he's "spraying" all over in Kaylee's room Mad Mad Mad Mad I'm so mad right now, I seriously can't win with animals!! I took Kaylee up to lay her down for her nap & that's ALL you can smell up there is cat urine or whatever it is they do. I got down on my hands & knees trying to figure out where he's doing it & there are 4-5 wetspots on the floor & sure enough that's what it is. It's byfar the worst smell EVER. I'm afraid it's going to make Kaylee sick. Does anyone know what takes that smell out? My mom said scrub it with laundry detergent but this smell is strong, it doesn't seem like detergent would take it out. Whyyyyyy meeeeeee!?!

that stuff stinks ! speedy was doing that quite a while back. we had to get him done in the end! it just stank the place out. getting him done is the best thing ive ever done. the smells gone Smile and when they're spraying, they always take you by surprise. i had to shut all the bedrooms off incase he sprayed in the rooms. unfortunately the only way to stop the spraying is getting the cat netured. unless you're planning on having kittens, its the ideal choice

Male cats don't go in heat. They mark their territory though.

First, you need to find where he is doing it and clean the carpet. You will need to keep him out of her room because he will continue to go in the same area! Other animals that come in your house will be able to smell it no matter HOW much you clean it and will continue to use that area as a pee place.

This is part of the reason to get male cats fixed early. They don't spray after they've been fixed when they are kittens. Once they start spraying, you can't stop it.

Did you recently get a new kitty?

We won't have money to get him fixed until income taxes Sad This is horrible, that smell is just so strong, I'm afraid it's going to have all of Kaylee's clothes & everything smelling bad. I'm trying to think how I could keep him out of her room. There are no bedroom doors upstairs & he could jump over a gate obviously Sad

So now that he's doing this he isn't going to stop? I've never had a male cat before, I've always had females & they never did this.

Kaylee's napping & she doesn't feel well so I want to let her sleep, otherwise I'd be up there right now scrubbing away.

he'll carry on doing it until he has been fixed. keep everything like clothes away so he cant spray on them. its a shame you haven't got a door because that would be the easy answer. just keep an eye on him and when he does spray, clean it right away

Ok, I'm gonna look up the vets number & call to see how much it is. We can't live with this smell & him doing it again everytime I turn around Sad

it was rather expensive when i got speedy fixed, but that's because i got him chipped in the same procedure, so it'd be easier and they gave me a discount on the chipping because i got them both done. i knew i had to get it done, so i started saving as soon as he started spraying. i couldn't live with the smell anymore. i was embarassed when i had visitors come round

EWwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww

yeah we had that problem with our cat Meeko... We bought this odor neutralizer by Rug Doctor and it fixed it right up.. took away the smell and everything. Even kills the bacteria. U can find the stuff by the Rug Doctor displays at the grocery store.
you can get the blacklight too to help see if he's sprayed places you dont see.

Check into your area shelters, etc and see if there are any LOW COST programs in your area for spaying/neutering. Like I said, since he is an adult cat, he may not stop once he has been fixed. He might. But he might not.

Use regular spot carpet shampoo on the area.

Also get a spray bottle with just water in it. You'll need this to train your cats to stay out of areas you don't want them in, not scratch on furniture, etc.

When did you get these kitties?

I just called around to 3 different vet offices around here & finally got ahold of someone. It's going to cost me right around $200 but that includes luekemia testing, shots & the nuetering. Yikes.

I tried the 2 shelters around here & must be they're closed or something because I'm getting no answer at either. A lot of places are closed today because we're in the middle of a snow storm. We're going shopping Saturday so I'll look around for some carpet shampoo while we're out. I have a water bottle that I use when they're scratching on the furniture & trying to get up on the table when we're eating so I'll keep using that. It's a pain that he has to be doing this upstairs because we're not upstairs at all during the day, so I'm just going to have to watch every move he makes.

We got the bigger older cat from my mom, her boyfriend didn't like him at all & my mom was tired of hearing about it so we took him before they went & dropped him off somewhere. The kitten was wild, he was living underneath a shed, so we took him so he wouldn't freeze to death this winter. You bet he's getting fixed before he starts any of this!!

Just re read that & you asked WHEN we got them, not WHERE lol.. My bad Smile We got them maybe a month & a half ago? Not long ago at all.

maybe give him to a friend and then go get a cat from ASPCA? They are always already spayed/neutered.

Please continue to check on spay/neuter programs in your area. There have got to be some somewhere. I know that here, we can get a neuter for $60 on the program. Yes, it is still money - but you know.

He may be spraying in her room because it has the scent of another animal in there already...

Be sure to wipe up the messes right away.

I've heard that you can spray a water/vinegar solution on there and it will disguise the smell enough to make them stop. I don't know if that works though!!

Yeah, they won't do nuetoring or spaying here without having every single shot first, so that sucks. We'll be able to do it but not until the end of the month because this weeks paycheck is pretty well spent for Christmas & electric bill.. So I'm going to have to deal with cleaning up after him every single day until then. As if I don't have enough cleaning to do!!

He should be honored you love him so much! Smile

I got my kitty at a cat shelter. He cost $75. But he came already fixed so it seemed like a bargain to me. Smile

I'll def. keep trying to call the shelters to see what they can tell me, thanks for that idea because I didn't even know they had anything like that! The carpet in her bedroom is used, maybe the people who gave it to us had animals, I'm not sure Sad My mom just told me to use ammonia on it? I don't have any ammonia though. Or vinegar Sad What if I used hot water & bleach? Do you think that would do anything?
