Q: Anyone On "tramadol" For Pain? 2 herniated discs

Extremely eHealthy
I was just wondering becuase this is the first time it was perscribed for me in the ER when I fell last week. Kinda put my back out of wack again too.
Just wanted to know how it is working for you and if it is helping. If it is, I will ask doc to switch me from Hydrocodone or Oxycodone.
I have two buldging herniated disc's at L- 2,3. And in constant ache or pain. My Neurologist is doing my pain management and said I have chronic back pain. Just shopping around for less addictive medications.

Thanks,
Carrie

My husband has tried tramadol a few times to manage periodic pain and he doesn't really like it. It makes him woozy in the head and is difficult to come off.

My Doc had me on Tramadol for a month or so. Then my Neurologist swithed me to hydrocodone. The Tramadol did not seem to help with the pain much at all, and after a couple of weeks using it, it only gave me a headache each time I used it. If you are using the Hydrocodone for pain relief, I don't think you have to worry too much about addiction. I have been using it for several months now and don't seem to have any problem stopping for a week or so without it. I do use it again when my pain becomes severe, but have no kind of craving for it when not in pain. But everyone is different, so if you are using it, be careful. Don't take more than the prescribed amount unless directed by your doctor. I only take mine now when my pain is great enough that aspirin or tylenol by themselves will not manage my pain enough that I can work. Good luck!

Hi,

It worked for me when my pain was acute but I don't think that you can take it for long.

I'm on Tramadol for lower back pain right now. Been taking it daily for about 2 months. It works for me, BUT...it is VERY addicting and hard to come off of. I ran out of pills on a Tuesday, and by Friday I was in complete misery. And I'm only taking 50mg of Tramadol per day!!! I was really shocked at how quickly my body became dependant on such a low dosage. I take 1 50mg tablet right when I wake up in the morning with my breakfast...along with a 500mg Naproxen. If I don't eat something when I take it the Tramadol, I get nauseous. I must say this though...although it seems to work fairly well for my back pain...it does NOTHING for my sciatic pain in my right leg. I have no personal experience with either Hydrocodone or Oxycodone, so I can't help with any comparison there.

Hi
The tramadol did NOTHING for my herniated disc............I am in better spirits with Flexeril. At least I can still function, where as with taking loratab or oxycodon it seems too addictive. Just rather not take that chance. I think I'd rather suffer the back pain than be a walking zombie. Hope you are "back" to feeling better soon!

I'd like to add...that I don't feel like a "zombie" on the Tramadol. Infact, just the opposite...it's like a major "upper" for me. Gives me a nice energy boost. Don't know if that's how it works for everyone, though. Your results may vary.

I had the upper effect as well. It was hard when I came off them as I couldn't take them any more as i was put on amitrypiline as well and the two don't mix so I was told.

Hi, I have had back severe back pain since 2003. Cause not known. I started out on Cocodomel and the dosage went up and up because my body become amune to them..i then was put onto Tramadol....that too went up on the dosage and over the 3 years I have been on it..I am now on 400mg daily....prolonged relase tramadol that last up to 12 hours...been on this now for at least 3 years....NOW.....i'm back in agony and sluggish becuase of the pain in my back...I did get a lift from tramadol for the first couple of years but now, it has no affect...I could stop taking them now because its not doing ANYTHING FOR ME....I now my next step is morphine but i have been putting this off now for ages....now i have no quality of life as i am in constant pain....it takes hours for me to get going during the day.....can anyone tell me if they have moved on to morphine from tramadol and has it helped?????

I'm back on it!
I am finding Cocodomal makes me feel really drugged up -not a good state for work! so I have got some more Tramadol. I find it dulls down the pain but don't take it for too long or that makes you feel drugged up too. My pain can go down to a low level so I can ease off the pain killers but I understand that not everyone is as lucky as me. Good luck guys x

I liked how Tramadol worked for me...I just didn't like the withdrawal from it. I would likely still be on it, because it did take the edge off for me...but coming off of it was just brutal and I don't know if I could go through an episode like that again. I guess if you don't ever plan on stopping them, it would be okay. But I didn't want to have to depend on them to get myself through a day, so I quit.
