Q: Back injury and depression - what to do?
asked by: DoctorQuestion on December 12th, 2007
I am very stressed and finding it very hard to deal with the injury to my back. I have tried talking to people but noone seems to uderstand and is really getting me down. Also i have financial problems. All of these together is putting a great strain on my relationship and i am finding it hard to sleep,Snap all the time for things that usually would not bother me.

I used to be such an active person and played netball for South England and i have horses which due to my injury can no longer do. I can do nothing no more that i enjoyed,i have tried swimming which is the sport i am allowed to do but it does not interest me.

I dont know what to do anymore. I cant sleep and i am so tired, just feels like my whole world is crashing down. What can i do?

Given the symptoms you report (it's hard to sleep, you emotionally react all the time, tiredness…) and given the problems that worry you (injury, financial…), you could be experiencing some type of depressive disorder. A back injury and its consequences can provoke depression but it seems more likely that your personality is the real cause for your depressive state. You'll have to be strong to overcome this condition.

Ridding horses may at first appear more interesting than swimming but I believe that swimming could be very useful for your medical recovery. Perhaps in time you can completely recover from the injury and become able to ride again. In the mean time you'll have to struggle with the life lessons in front of you now. Believe me, there are much worse injuries and illness compared to your back injury. Any support from your relatives and friends would be valuable.
