I've recently started running again after a long absence from the sport. After running approx 1 km, the skin on my thighs start itching uncontrollably. So bad that I have to stop completely.

I have to resist scratching it, because if I do, red marks apear on my skin, and stays there for the next few hours. If I don't scratch it at all, the itch goes away in about 2 minutes.

My doctor doesn't have any idea what it may be. Is this common amongst unfit people? Since my mom also has the problem, i'm thinkng that it might be a hereditary skin condition.

Anybody out there fimiliar with the condition?

Itching During Excercise
I know of a couple of things it may be. The first one occurs when an increase of blood flow enters a body part or tissue level that has been fairly sedentary. The new blood flow can cause extreme itching and redness.Increased blood flow takes a short period of time to occur like increased heart rate, thus the delay in the reaction well into your workout. After you've gotten into a regular workout routine the symptomes generally go away. The other thing it might be is excercise induced allergy. Natural hystamines in your body are released during excercise and some people get an allergic reaction to them causing redness and itching. Some people even develope asthma like symptoms. Hope this might help.

This same thing happens to me. I think its the fat burning causing it to become irritated. This helped me,try not over exerting and take things more slow to get your body used to the running.

I have the SAME exact thing! All I do is I sit down for a few minutes and start running again, and try to bear with the itchy skin. I'm not sure what it is, I need to ask my doctor, but stldad seems like he already covered most of it.

my itchy thighs
ever since i was in the 7th grade i've had this problem also mine only occurs in the thigh muscle and you can't scratch it because it's below the surface of the skin and it happens when i walk, run, jump , jog any type of exercise to do with the legs i've found that basically punching my thighs relieves the itch i'm 32 now so i've lived with this for a while and the medical world is pretty cluless feels good to know ther are others

i've got the exercise itch too!
I've also wondered what the itching was! For me, its worse when I havn't exercised in a while...I also think its due to extra blood flow in my wobbly bits. I found that slapping areas that I know will itch before starting cardio help...just don't let anyone see you doing it! Vigorous rubbing would probably work just as well to get the blood flow started. I hope this helps you, I know the itching makes me so frusterated I want to stop. Once your body is used to working out the itch goes away, so don't let it stop you Smile

I'm on the ithcy leg bandwagon too...
Isn't this how it always goes?? People who love peanut butter are allergic to peanuts. People who just want to go for a run get severe itching soooooo bad that it'd almost feel better to just detach your legs from your body!! I've had this itchy leg thing for quite a while and I always felt so lame telling people that I couldn't run because of it. Its not that common and I always worry that people will think I'm just making up excuses. I've taken allergy meds before working out and I've worn special pants and neither worked. This is the only thing that has worked--in college I was motivated to hit the gym every night for long periods of time just to gaze at a gorgeous upperclassmen who also worked out every single night. Because I was there for so long and wasn't necessarily in for an intense work out I'd really take my time...1/2 hour of slow-moderate peddaling on the bike followed by 1/2 hour of walking-light jogging on the treadmill. The itching would still happen but I was able to stick it out. After keeping up that exercise routine for about 3 months the itching just went away. I'd be able to workout and do an intense/quick run on the treadmill without an ounce of discomfort. The hard part is that once you stop running on an extremely regular basis the itching comes back full force! I've also noticed that the older I get, the less willing I am to put up with it and I'm more apt to throw the towel in and forget about running altogether. Sad to say, but so far, I haven't found the quck fix for my itchy legs and I don't have the time to spend and hour or more per day just warming my legs up.

Itchy skin
I've also experienced this! I just started running again after 2 years. I had forgotten about the itch, and there it was again, the first time I started to get my heart pumping & blood flowing. For me, the itch tends to be on my torso, mostly stomach and back. I have had it on my thighs before as well. Very strange and annoying!

Same thing has happened to me for years. I get itchy on my torso and thighs. I ran track in middle and high school and never got any relief from it. I just stuck it out, knowing that it would go away within minutes after I stopped running. Less impact-related sports like riding a bike doesn't cause the itch, so I usually just stick with that.

Itchy when working out
I used to experience the same thing, whenever I jog, running, walking, and jumping not only my tight will itch but also my butt, waist and stomach n lower back area. According to my personal trainer it is because my body temprature were higher than external temprature causing my body hard to sweat in which the body is working hard on the pores to force the sweat out. her suggestion were, 1 to wear a material that can allow your skin to breath and observe the sweat when you work out. 2. keep exercising even when u feel itch like hell, because once your body used to exercising body temprature until it force the pore to open for sweating, you eventually will get over the itchiness. she was right, after 5 days of 30mins of running on treadmill, I have never felt itchy anymore whenever I exercise. hope ithelps. when it's itch, hold urself not to scratch it, the more its itchy, walk/jog/run quicker so that u can get the sweat out and the most important thing don't focus on the itchiness, try to think of something else to distract your mind from the itchiness. eventually, when u reach your maximum body work out. u will stop itchy when u exercise

Wow, I started getting the exact same symptoms like 2 weeks ago. It's been so long since I had this kidn of itching... It might be because of 2 things for me...

First of all I haven't exercised like I used to since I had an injury (playing soccer) about 2 months ago.

I just started hitting the gym about 2 weeks ago and I'm getting used to it again...

Also it started happening when I stopped showering with hot water (I'm mostly showering with cold/mild water now)

So who knows, it might be related to the cold weather or dry skin, or lack of exercise which I was used to doing...

I expect it to go away when I'm back to my normal routine/exercise levels

Exercise Itchy Skin
Yes - I have experienced all the same for years - my palms will even itch from the vibration of the lawn mower. The research Ive done points to a type of urticaria / Angioedema - allergy related. So I am finally going in for testing so I can solve the cause.

I had no idea that so many people had this. I am 45 and first noticed this condition in college when running. I remember being in an aerobic class, and hoping that I would not start itching. I have tried to narrow down all the possilbities and causes of the itching,I thought it was just where my clothes rubbed my skin, but then realized I would also itch on my calves (when wearing shorts), then I thought maybe it was temperature going from cool house to hot outside weather, or hot to cold. But it would not always seem to happen with temperature variation. Then I thought it was the friction of my cellulite rubbing my deep muscle tissue. (Because like was mentioned it is like a deep tissue itching, that scratching really doesn't seem to relieve.)But it would itch where there was very little fat tissue.(calves, arms, my ankles would even itch)I too experience that after a week of regular excerise this would subside, and if I didn't given in to scratching it would go away after a while. However not scratching is extremely difficult and needing to scratch you butt, inner thighs etc. is very embrassing. I also thought it many be an allergy to excerise, but how lame does that sound. No one would believe it.
I have never tried to slap/rub legs prior to excerise. Sounds like a good idea and I plan to give it a try. Someone should do a study on this, would love to have some true medical reason for it.

I think i might have answer to all this.I am African i move down to Australia and after 2years winter experience i started feeling all this sort of symptom. But the problem is actually dead skins under the skin or dirt, since it been a while you broke sweat. How to get read of this is a really scrub bath. I use a local soap from Africa( Nigeria) called ose dudu, if you can get that. it does well or a very good sponge scrub with Alum and a key soap . you can even try detergent.it does work all just one good scrub bath with a very good sponge , try and ask for some one to help with the back. Wish you all good health.

Itchy Skin When Exercising.
Happens a lot, I was starting to seriously doubt my personal hygiene routine; maybe I needed to bathe or change bed linens/towels/clothes more frequently. That isn't the reason.

These episodes are sporadic, and mainly came on after I start to walk/run (generally exercise indoor/outdoor) after long periods of a more sedentary-like lifestyle. The itching is unbearable. I am frequently forced to scratch intensely because simply pausing or trying to take my mind off it doesn't help.

I also thought it was somewhat hereditary too, as my mother explained experiencing these as a young adult (and also after "trying to work out". I feels embarassing to scratch. So in public, there are feelings of near anxiety attacks. The sight of dirty water or dog faeces nearby intensifies the whole feeling as well. I hate it when I would have to walk through rain. Sounds crazy!? But the forced me to search for answers. I am determined to not let this limit my involvement in life. Even more so, because I love being outdoors.

Thank God for Google, and informative sight like these. I've identified that there a many people going through this, and I'm not a "freak of nature" for want of a better term.

I've learnt that itching and pain are related sensations due to nerve connections. And also, dilation of the capillaries, and the release of histamine during these periods of exercise after long periods of inactivity is interpreted by the brain and expressed through itching in the limbs etc. As such, I will try an over-the-counter antihistamine solution before such endeavours. And will take up further queries with a GP, though preferrable a Dermatologist for an examination to rule out any other possible factors. Sigh...

Yes, I agree with Stidad. I have the same symptoms as you and for me, the itchiness was felt around my upper chest. The area which I can observe more blood flow. After going for more regular exercise routine, it seldom happens again for me.

Try calmoseptine
I've had this for almost 4 years now. I've found a few things that help, also, you ought to research candida albicans, as well as cholinergic urticaria. Mine is extremely intense, it feels as if my entire body is swarming with fire ants, the intense stage lasts up to ten minutes, but lingering itchiness may proceed for hours. 1, if you notice stress triggers like being startled can cause a sudden attack, consider quitting caffeine, nicotine, and other things that raise your stress levels. Drinking diluted (braggs or all natural) apple cider vinegar can help with all allergies. I started using calmoseptine recently, and while not a cure, it is extremely extremely helpful at keeping your skin cool. Look it up at Walgreens, its not very expensive either, 8 bucks a tube. This helped me more then anything else.
